The ocean was restless that afternoon. Gray clouds drifted slowly across the sky, and the waves rolled heavily toward the rocky shoreline. The beach, usually quiet during that time of year, suddenly became the center of an extraordinary moment that would bring strangers together from many different parts of the world.

It began with a simple walk along the beach.

Several tourists were strolling along the shore, enjoying the fresh sea air and the dramatic view of the open water. The whale was still alive.

Its powerful tail moved weakly, splashing water as it tried to turn itself back toward the deeper sea. But the tide had dropped, leaving the giant animal stuck in water that was far too shallow for it to swim.

If the whale remained there for too long, its own massive weight could begin crushing its internal organs. Without enough water to support its body, the situation could quickly become fatal.

Among the growing crowd, someone quickly called the local marine rescue team. But the rescuers explained that they needed time to arrive, and the whale could not wait much longer.

Then the whale moved.
