The sun was beginning to dip behind the hills when Emma’s small car sputtered and rolled to a stop on the narrow mountain road. She had been driving home from a weekend visit with friends when the engine light flashed, followed by a loud clunk that made her heart jump. She tried turning the key again, but the engine refused to respond. Silence settled around her, broken only by the distant sound of birds calling across the valley.
Emma looked around nervously. The road was isolated and there was no phone signal in the area. Her hands trembled slightly as she stepped out to check the car, mostly out of instinct, even though she had no idea what she might find under the hood. She lifted it and stared at the mess of parts and wires. The smell of something burnt reached her nose. Whatever it was, it was not something she could fix.

Emma nodded.
