Over time, I stopped trying so hard, too.

Thatโ€™s why, when she called me out of the blue, sounding oddly cheerful, I was taken aback.

โ€œHey, Rufus!โ€ she chirped, almost too upbeat. โ€œHow about we grab dinner? Thereโ€™s this new restaurant I want to try.โ€

At first, I didnโ€™t know what to say. Was this her way of mending fences?

If it was, I was all for it.

โ€œSure,โ€ I said, my heart cautiously hopeful. โ€œJust tell me where and when.โ€

Maybe this was our chance.

Something Feltโ€ฆ Off
The restaurant was fancyโ€”too fancy for someone like me.

Dark wood tables, candlelit ambiance, and waiters in crisp white shirts. I felt out of place.

Hyacinth was already there when I arrived, flashing me a bright smileโ€”but something about it didnโ€™t feel right.

โ€œHey, Rufus! You made it!โ€ she greeted me enthusiastically.

Her energy was offโ€”too forced. Like she was trying too hard to seem casual.

I sat down, studying her carefully.

โ€œSoโ€ฆ how have you been?โ€ I asked, hoping to break the ice.

โ€œGood, good,โ€ she replied quickly, her eyes darting to the menu. โ€œYou? Everything good with you?โ€

She wasnโ€™t really listening.

Before I could answer, she waved over the waiter and started ordering for us.

โ€œWeโ€™ll have the lobster,โ€ she said, barely glancing at me. โ€œAnd maybe the steak too. What do you think?โ€

I hadnโ€™t even looked at the menu yet, and she was already picking the most expensive items.

It wasnโ€™t like her.

Something wasnโ€™t right.

An Awkward Silence & a Sudden Disappearance

The meal started, and I tried to steer the conversation toward something meaningful.

โ€œItโ€™s been a while, hasnโ€™t it? Iโ€™ve missed catching up with you.โ€

She barely looked up from her lobster.

NEXT:

โ€œYeah,โ€ she muttered, cutting into her food. โ€œBeen busy, you know?โ€

โ€œBusy enough to disappear for a year?โ€ I half-joked, but there was sadness behind my words.

She hesitated, but instead of answering, she kept checking her phone.

I could tell.

She was waiting for something.

Or someone.

The bill finally came, and I reached for it out of habit, pulling out my card. But just as I was about to hand it over, Hyacinth leaned in close to the waiter and whispered something.

Before I could ask, she shot me a quick smile and stood up.

โ€œIโ€™ll be right back,โ€ she said. โ€œJust need to use the washroom.โ€

And just like thatโ€ฆ she was gone.

I waited.

And waited.

But she didnโ€™t come back.

When the waiter returned, I glanced down at the bill.

My stomach dropped.

The total was outrageous.

Had she justโ€ฆ bailed on me?

With a heavy sigh, I handed over my card, swallowing the disappointment.

I had been played.

Or so I thought.

The Grand Reveal

As I walked toward the exit, feeling foolish for expecting anything different, I suddenly heard a sound behind me.

I turned around, expecting to see an apologetic Hyacinthโ€”but instead, I found her grinning, holding an enormous cake and a bunch of balloons.

I blinked.

Before I could ask what was happening, she blurted out the words that changed everything.

โ€œYouโ€™re gonna be a granddad!โ€

For a second, my brain short-circuited.

โ€œAโ€ฆ granddad?โ€ I repeated, barely able to process what Iโ€™d just heard.

She laughed, nodding excitedly.

โ€œYes! I wanted to surprise you!โ€ she said, lifting the cake proudly.

It was white with blue and pink icing, and in bold letters across the top, it read:

โ€œCongrats, Grandpa!โ€

A Second Chance at Family

Hyacinth bit her lip, suddenly nervous.

NEXT:

โ€œI know weโ€™ve had our differences, but I wanted you to be part of this. Youโ€™re going to be a granddad.โ€

Her voice was softer now.

And just like that, everything clicked into place.

She wasnโ€™t trying to ditch me.

She wasnโ€™t playing games.

She was trying to reconnect.

โ€œIโ€”I donโ€™t know what to say,โ€ I finally admitted, my chest tightening with emotion.

โ€œYou donโ€™t have to say anything,โ€ she said, eyes locking onto mine. โ€œI just wanted you to knowโ€ฆ I want you in our lives. My life. And the babyโ€™s life.โ€

My throat felt thick.

For years, I had wanted to feel like I belonged in her life.

And now, here she wasโ€”offering me exactly that.

โ€œI guess I wanted to tell you in a way that would show you how much I care.โ€

A lump formed in my throat.

I looked at the cake, at Hyacinthโ€™s nervous but hopeful expression, and suddenly, everything from the past didnโ€™t matter anymore.

I stepped forward and pulled her into a hug.

For the first time in years, she didnโ€™t pull away.

โ€œIโ€™m so happy for you,โ€ I whispered, my voice thick. โ€œYou have no idea how much this means to me.โ€

She laughed through her tears.

โ€œIt means a lot to me too. Iโ€™m sorry Iโ€™ve been distant, Rufus. But Iโ€™m here now. And I want you here too.โ€

I squeezed her hand, hoping she could feel just how much this moment meant.

For years, I had felt like I didnโ€™t belong in her life.

But today, that changed.

I wasnโ€™t just Rufus anymore.

I was going to be her babyโ€™s granddad.

And that meant everything.

Would you have ever expected this surprise? What would you have done in Rufusโ€™s place?
