I woke up slowly, the way you do when your mind senses something is different before your body understands why. The room was dark except for the faint glow of the streetlight slipping through the curtains. At first, I thought I had imagined the sound. A half‑dream, a fragment of sleep clinging to my thoughts. Then I heard it again.

A whisper.

Soft. Careful. Close.

My heart began to pound as I lay completely still, listening. The house was supposed to be empty except for me and my daughter. No television. No radio. No reason for voices in the night. I held my breath, trying to pinpoint the sound, afraid that even the smallest movement would make it stop.

“Daddy…”

The word was barely louder than air moving through leaves, but it was unmistakable. It was her voice.

I turned my head slowly toward the door. My daughter stood there in the darkness, her small silhouette framed by the hallway light she had left on. She was clutching her stuffed rabbit tightly to her chest, her shoulders slightly hunched as if she were bracing herself.

“What’s wrong?” I asked quietly, pushing myself up onto one elbow.

She didn’t answer right away. Instead, she took a few hesitant steps into the room, stopping near the foot of the bed. Her eyes looked too serious for a child her age. Too focused. My stomach tightened.

I reached for the lamp and turned it on. The soft yellow light filled the room, chasing away the shadows but not the unease settling in my chest. I motioned for her to come closer, and she climbed onto the bed, curling up beside me.

“Tell me exactly what happened,” I said, keeping my voice calm even though my heart was racing.

She swallowed. “I woke up because I thought you were calling me. But when I listened, the voice wasn’t loud. It was whispering. It was saying my name.”

My breath caught. “What did it say?”

She hesitated, then spoke so quietly I had to lean closer. “It said I didn’t have to be scared anymore. That it was watching me.”

Every instinct in my body screamed to get up, turn on every light in the house, and search every room. But I didn’t want to frighten her more than she already was.

“Did you see anyone?” I asked.

She shook her head. “No. But I felt like someone was there. Like when you know someone is standing behind you even if you can’t see them.”

I pulled her into my arms and held her tightly. Her heart was beating fast against my chest. Whatever she had experienced, it was real to her. And that mattered more than any explanation I could offer.

I walked through the house slowly, turning on lights as I went. Living room. Kitchen. Bathroom. Everything looked normal. Doors locked. Windows closed. No signs of anyone having been inside. The house was silent except for the hum of the refrigerator and the faint ticking of the clock on the wall.

The nightlight on her dresser was on, casting soft shapes on the walls. Her bed was untouched. But something felt off. The air felt heavier somehow, like a room that had just been occupied.

I knew for a fact it had been closed earlier that evening. I had stepped on enough plastic toys in the dark to remember that clearly. I knelt down and looked inside. Everything was there, except one thing.

She had gotten it years ago and used to pretend she was a radio host, recording stories and songs. She had lost interest in it months ago. I lifted it out slowly, my fingers stiff.

The voice was low, calm, almost soothing. It spoke slowly, carefully, as if it knew it was being listened to.

I didn’t tell her what I found. Not that night. I went back to my room, sat on the bed with her until she fell asleep, and stayed awake until morning. I kept the recorder with me the entire time.
