The winter morning was harsh and silent. A thick layer of snow covered the ground, and the cold air felt sharp with every breath. The nearby forest looked frozen in time, its trees coated with frost and ice.

Not far from the woods, a narrow river slowly moved between the snowy banks. Most of its surface had frozen during the long winter nights, but in some places the ice was thin and dangerous.

For the animals living in the forest, winter was always the hardest season. Food was scarce, and moving through deep snow required great effort. Many animals spent their days searching carefully for water and small patches of grass hidden beneath the snow.

That morning, a young deer had wandered toward the frozen river while looking for something to drink. The deer was cautious by nature, stepping slowly along the icy edge of the water. But the surface of the river was deceptive. What looked like solid ice was actually weak and fragile.

As the deer stepped forward, the ice suddenly cracked.

Before the animal could react, its legs broke through the frozen surface and plunged into the freezing water below. The deer struggled desperately, trying to jump back onto the ice, but each movement only shattered more of the thin surface.

Within seconds, the animal was trapped.

Its body trembled as the icy water surrounded its legs and chest. The riverbank was too steep and slippery for the deer to climb out. Every attempt to escape ended with the deer slipping back into the freezing water.

The cold quickly began draining the animalโ€™s strength.

The deer kicked and struggled, its hooves striking the ice, but the surface kept breaking under its weight. Soon the animal could barely hold its head above the water. Exhaustion was setting in, and the freezing temperature made it harder and harder for the deer to move.

It looked like the deer was ready to give up.

Not far away, a man named Luka was walking along a small path near the river. He lived in a nearby village and often took morning walks through the forest. That day, he had come out to check the area after the nightโ€™s freezing temperatures.

As he walked, he suddenly heard a strange splashing sound coming from the river.

At first, he thought it might be a falling branch or ice breaking naturally. But then he heard it againโ€”louder this time, mixed with the desperate movements of an animal.

Luka quickly followed the sound.

When he reached the riverbank, his heart dropped at the sight before him.

A deer was trapped in the icy water, struggling to stay afloat. Its eyes were wide with fear, and its body shook violently from the freezing cold.

โ€œOh noโ€ฆ hold on,โ€ Luka whispered.

He knew he had to act quickly. If the deer stayed in the water much longer, the cold would weaken it completely.

But rescuing the animal wouldnโ€™t be easy. The ice around the deer was fragile, and if Luka stepped directly onto it, he could fall into the freezing river as well.

Thinking quickly, he looked around for something that could help.

Nearby, he spotted a long fallen branch lying close to the riverbank. Luka picked it up and carefully approached the edge of the ice. He moved slowly, testing each step to avoid breaking through.

The deer noticed him and struggled again, splashing water across the ice.

โ€œItโ€™s okay,โ€ Luka said softly. โ€œIโ€™m here to help.โ€

He stretched the long branch toward the animal, hoping the deer might grab onto it or push against it. At first, the deer didnโ€™t understand what he was doing. But after a few moments, the animal instinctively pressed its chest against the branch as it tried to climb upward.

โ€œGoodโ€ฆ thatโ€™s it,โ€ Luka encouraged.

Using all his strength, Luka pulled the branch while the deer pushed with its legs. The ice cracked and shifted beneath them, but slowly the animal began moving closer to the riverbank.

The process took several long, tense minutes.

The deer slipped back once, nearly losing its balance entirely. But Luka kept the branch steady and continued pulling, refusing to give up.

Finally, with one powerful movement, the deer managed to lift its front legs onto the snowy bank.

โ€œCome onโ€ฆ just a little more,โ€ Luka said.

The animal kicked strongly with its back legs, and suddenly its entire body slid out of the freezing water onto the snow.

For a moment, the deer lay on the ground, breathing heavily and trembling from the cold. Water dripped from its fur, and its legs shook as it tried to stand.
