Many years ago, I made a promise to my dad — that I would do everything I could to keep him at home, surrounded by family, no matter what life brought.

Fifteen years ago, that promise began to be tested. And in the past several months, it’s been tested more than ever.

Still, somehow… we’ve kept that promise.

But life has changed in ways I never imagined.

My dad was once a man who drove a semi-truck across the country, spending weeks on the road, handling everything on his own. He was independent, strong, and always moving.

Now, he goes to the gas station with me and doesn’t remember what to do.

He used to always have a pot of coffee brewing — it was part of who he was.
Now, most days, he doesn’t remember how to make one.

He was the one who cooked, who taught, who handled everything around the house.
Now, he can’t be near the stove unless someone is there watching closely.

He once passed every physical test with ease.
Now, walking even a short distance can lead to a fall.

He was always the one driving, taking care of others.
Now, he hasn’t been behind the wheel in years.

He taught me everything — from taking care of vehicles to maintaining a home.
And today, I’m the one helping him with the simplest tasks.

This wasn’t the life I imagined growing up.

I had dreams of my dad teaching my children the same things he taught me. I imagined laughter, lessons, and memories being passed down.

Instead, my reality looks different.

My reality is helping him eat.
Helping him get dressed.
Making his coffee.
Helping him shower.
Putting on his shoes.
Walking beside him so he doesn’t fall.
Speaking for him when he can’t.
Being there, every single day.

Some days are incredibly hard.

There are moments filled with exhaustion, frustration, and quiet tears. Moments where everything feels overwhelming.

And yet…

There are also moments of deep connection — when he looks at me and says “thank you,” or apologizes for needing help.

But the truth is, there’s nothing to apologize for.

Because if I had to choose again, I would make the same promise.
And I would keep it — every single time.

This journey isn’t easy. It’s not what I expected. But it’s built on something stronger than expectation.

It’s built on love.

And sometimes, love means showing up — not for the life you imagined, but for the person who once showed up for you, in every way possible.
