The midday sun blazed over the wide African river, turning the surface of the water into a sheet of shimmering silver. Along the muddy bank, reeds swayed gently in the warm breeze, and birds called from nearby acacia trees.

It was a place full of life, but also full of danger. Few animals inspired as much caution as the enormous creatures resting in the shallows.
A group of hippos lounged near the riverโs edge.
Most of their massive bodies were submerged, with only their broad backs, ears, and eyes visible above the water. They appeared calm, but their size alone was enough to command respect. Hippos are among the strongest animals in the world, and even a seemingly peaceful one can become unpredictable when food or territory is involved.
A short distance away, a small stray dog wandered along the bank.
He was thin, dusty, and clearly hungry. His tail hung low as he sniffed the ground for scraps of food. Perhaps he had followed fishermen to the river, or perhaps he had simply drifted there in search of anything edible. Whatever the reason, he was far from the safety of the village and dangerously close to the hippos.
The little dog seemed unaware of the risk.
He paused to sniff at a clump of grass, then trotted closer to the waterโs edge.
One of the hippos lifted its head.
It was larger than the others, with scarred skin and a broad mouth that opened in a slow yawn. The dog froze when he noticed the giant animal staring directly at him.
For a few seconds, neither moved.
Then the hippo began to emerge from the water.
Its enormous body rose from the shallows, sending ripples across the river. Each heavy step sank into the mud, leaving deep footprints as it moved toward the small dog.
The dog backed away.
He barked once, a sharp, uncertain sound, then retreated several steps. But the hippo continued forward, seemingly interested in the unusual visitor standing in its path.
The dog turned in circles, unsure where to run. The open riverbank offered little cover, and the hippo was closing the distance faster than seemed possible for such a massive animal.
Nearby, a fruit vendor was loading his truck after a morning at the local market.
He looked up when he heard the dog barking and saw the alarming scene unfold: a tiny dog on the riverbank and a giant hippo moving steadily toward him.
The man knew he had to act quickly.
Hippos can be extremely dangerous, and getting too close would put both him and the dog at risk. He glanced into the back of his truck and spotted several unsold watermelons.
An idea came to him.
He grabbed one of the large fruits and ran to a safe distance from the riverbank. With all his strength, he rolled the watermelon across the ground so that it landed several yards in front of the approaching hippo.
The watermelon split open on impact.
Bright red fruit and juice spread across the dirt.
The hippo stopped.
Its ears twitched, and it lowered its head toward the unexpected treat. Drawn by the scent and sudden movement, it turned its attention away from the dog.
The little dog seized the opportunity.
He sprinted toward the vendor, paws kicking up dust as he ran. The man crouched and whistled encouragingly, guiding the frightened animal farther from the riverโs edge.
Meanwhile, the hippo began chewing on the broken watermelon.
The vendor did not wait to see if the distraction would last. He scooped up the dog and carried him to the safety of his truck.
The dog trembled in his arms but made no attempt to escape. His rapid breathing gradually slowed as he realized the danger had passed.
From the truck, the man watched as the hippo finished the watermelon and eventually turned back toward the river, losing interest in the now-absent dog.
The rescue had worked.
The vendor offered the little dog some water and a bit of food from his lunch. The dog ate eagerly, wagging his tail for the first time that day.
Touched by the animalโs condition and close call, the vendor decided not to leave him behind.
He drove the dog back to the village, where a local veterinarian examined him and confirmed that he was underweight but otherwise healthy. After a bath, a meal, and a place to rest, the once-stray dog began to recover quickly.
