The highway stretched straight through a dry stretch of wilderness, cutting between rocky outcrops and patches of scrubby forest.

The midday heat shimmered above the asphalt, warping the view of distant trees and making the road look like it was melting into the horizon.
Traffic moved steadily but cautiouslyโthis was an area where wildlife often crossed without warning.
Most drivers expected nothing more than the occasional bird or stray goat near the roadside.
But suddenly, something unusual appeared in the middle of the road.
A young deer stood frozen on the asphalt.
It was small, likely still very young, its legs thin and unsteady, its coat pale brown with faint white spots. It looked confused, disorientedโcaught between instinct and fear.
It had likely wandered from the nearby forest and stepped onto the highway without understanding the danger.
And it was not alone.
From the opposite side of the road, emerging slowly from a rocky drainage ditch, a large monitor lizard was moving toward it.
The reptile was powerful, its long tail dragging behind it as its heavy body slid across the hot surface. Its forked tongue flicked repeatedly as it locked onto the deerโs presence. Monitor lizards are opportunistic by nature, and while not typically aggressive toward large prey, they can become dangerous when food or territory is involved.
This one had clearly noticed the vulnerable young deer.
The deer took a shaky step backward.
But behind it, a fast-moving car horn blared.
A vehicle approached too quickly, forcing the deer to freeze again in panic. For a brief second, it was trapped in placeโtoo afraid to move forward, too exposed to retreat.
The monitor lizard advanced.
Its claws scraped lightly against the asphalt as it closed the distance. The situation was unfolding in seconds, but to anyone watching, it felt painfully slow.
Then another vehicle appearedโa pickup truck slowing sharply as it approached the scene.
The driver, a man named Rohan, immediately noticed something was wrong.
At first, he thought the deer was simply crossing the road. But as he got closer, he saw the lizard moving directly toward it. His foot instinctively came off the accelerator.
โOh noโฆโ he muttered.
He pulled the truck slightly toward the shoulder but did not stop completely yet, trying to assess the safest way to intervene without causing more panic or triggering a traffic accident.
The deer suddenly bolted a few stepsโthen stopped again, confused by the sound of another car coming from behind.
The monitor lizard reacted instantly, accelerating its movement.
Rohan realized there was no time to wait.
He slammed on the horn.
The loud, sudden sound echoed across the highway.
The deer jolted, spinning toward the shoulder instinctively. The monitor lizard paused for a split second, distracted by the noise and vibration.
That moment of hesitation was critical.
Rohan opened his truck door slightly and shouted loudlyโnot to scare the animals toward him, but to create a strong directional disturbance away from the road.
โGo! Go back to the trees!โ he yelled.
The deer, overwhelmed by the chaos, finally broke into motion. It sprinted toward the roadside barrier, stumbling once but regaining balance quickly.
The monitor lizard shifted direction again, attempting to follow, but the combination of engine noise, horn, and human presence disrupted its focus. It slowed, unsure whether to continue or retreat.
More vehicles began to appear behind Rohan, forcing him to act quickly to avoid a chain reaction on the highway.
He waved his arm out of the window to signal drivers to slow down.
โStop! Slow down ahead!โ he shouted.
The deer reached the edge of the road and jumped awkwardly over the shallow ditch separating the highway from the rocky ground beyond. It stumbled once more, landing hard but continuing forward.
The monitor lizard stopped at the center line of the road.
For a few seconds, it remained still, tongue flicking again as it reassessed the situation. The sudden disturbance had broken its focus completely.
Then, slowly, it turned away from the deer.
It slid back toward the drainage ditch, disappearing into the shadowed rocks where it had come from.
Only then did the tension on the highway begin to ease.
Rohan exhaled deeply, realizing he had been holding his breath the entire time.
The deer, now on safer ground near the forest edge, stood still for a moment. It looked back once toward the road, its chest rising and falling rapidly, before finally disappearing into the trees.
Traffic resumed slowly, drivers carefully passing the area while still processing what they had just witnessed.

Rohan stayed parked for a moment longer.
The highway returned to its usual rhythmโwind, heat, distant enginesโbut the brief interruption lingered in his mind.
