Dark clouds hung low over the countryside as steady rain turned the dirt roads into slippery tracks of mud. Water flowed slowly through shallow ditches beside the fields, carrying leaves, broken branches, and debris from the storm that had passed earlier that morning.
Near one of those muddy roadside ditches, a heartbreaking scene remained hidden from most passing travelers.
A mother donkey was trapped.
A thick rope had become tightly wrapped around her body and one of her legs after she slipped into the muddy ditch near an old wooden fence. The more she struggled to climb out, the deeper the mud pulled against her weight. Wet soil covered her fur, and the rope restricted her movement every time she tried to free herself.
Only a few feet away stood her baby.
The young donkey waited anxiously near the edge of the ditch, too frightened to move far from its mother. Every few moments, the foal stepped closer and let out soft cries, watching helplessly as the trapped donkey struggled below.
The mother tried again.
She pushed against the muddy slope with her front legs, but the soaked ground collapsed beneath her weight. The rope tightened slightly, forcing her back into the ditch with an exhausted grunt.
The baby donkey immediately cried louder.
Despite being scared, it refused to leave her side.
Cars occasionally passed along the nearby road, but the ditch sat low enough beside the overgrown grass that most drivers never noticed what was happening there.
The rain began falling again.
Cold droplets struck the muddy ground while the mother donkey lowered her head in exhaustion. Her breathing had become heavier, and every failed attempt to escape drained more of her remaining strength.
The baby donkey carefully moved along the edge of the ditch, trying to stay close without slipping in as well.
Then, sometime later, a small delivery van slowed along the roadside.
The driver, a man named Stefan, noticed unusual movement through the tall wet grass. At first, he thought an animal was simply grazing near the ditch. But then he heard the desperate cries.
He stopped immediately.
Stefan stepped out into the rain and followed the sound toward the muddy roadside ditch. The moment he saw the trapped donkey and her frightened baby, his expression changed completely.
“Oh no…” he whispered.
The mother donkey lifted her head weakly toward him while the foal backed away nervously.
Stefan approached carefully.
He understood immediately that the situation could become dangerous if the frightened animal panicked. Muddy ditches were unpredictable, and the soaked rope around the donkey’s leg could easily cause injury if pulled incorrectly.
“It’s okay,” Stefan said softly. “I’m going to help.”
The baby donkey watched him closely while remaining near its mother.
Stefan pulled out his phone and contacted local animal rescue workers, explaining the difficult situation and requesting assistance quickly. But because of the storm and remote location, help would take time to arrive.
Meanwhile, the rain continued falling.
The ditch slowly filled with more water and loose mud.
Stefan realized the donkey could not remain trapped there much longer.
He carefully moved closer, examining how the rope had become tangled around the donkey’s body. Part of it appeared tied to broken fencing hidden beneath the mud while the rest twisted tightly around her back leg.
Every movement had to be slow and careful.
The mother donkey remained frightened but exhausted enough not to resist aggressively. Her focus stayed mostly on the foal standing nearby.
The baby donkey stepped forward again and gently nudged its mother’s neck.
The emotional moment hit Stefan hard.
“She’s holding on for you,” he murmured quietly.
Using a small knife from his van, Stefan carefully began cutting away sections of loose rope that were no longer securing the donkey but still restricting movement.
The mud made everything harder.
His boots sank into the wet ground while rainwater ran down his jacket sleeves. Several times he nearly lost balance near the slippery edge of the ditch.
Still, he continued.
The mother donkey shifted slightly as some pressure from the rope eased.
“That’s it,” Stefan encouraged softly. “Easy…”
The foal watched every movement silently.
After several tense minutes, Stefan managed to free most of the rope around the donkey’s body. But one tight section remained trapped beneath the mud around her leg.
And that section was the real problem.
The donkey could not climb out while it remained tangled.
Stefan carefully reached lower into the muddy water, feeling for the buried rope while trying not to scare the exhausted animal. Thick mud covered everything, making it difficult to see clearly.

The donkey slipped again.
