Friday nights at *Flavors of the World* restaurant are always busy and lively. As a waitress, I love the buzz of conversation and the variety of languages customers use to order from our international menu.

One couple, Amanda and Andrew, caught my attention. Amanda was bright and kind, impressing me with her fluency in several languages. She confidently ordered dishes in Italian, Spanish, German, and more — her pronunciation was always impressive.

Andrew, however, often interrupted Amanda, correcting her words in a way that felt more like criticism than help. Week after week, he belittled her efforts, which was disheartening to watch.

One Friday, Andrew’s parents joined them, and the pattern continued. Andrew openly told Amanda to stop “showing off” with her language skills, which made her visibly uncomfortable.

I couldn’t stay silent any longer. Speaking kindly in Mandarin, I asked Andrew to treat Amanda with respect. Surprised, Amanda thanked me, and Andrew and his parents seemed taken aback.

Amanda then stood up for herself, explaining that her love for languages was a passion she’d worked hard to develop. She reminded everyone that respect is key — for different cultures, for hard work, and for each other.

Soon after, Amanda decided to leave the relationship and started coming to the restaurant alone. She shared with me how freeing it was to stop feeling ashamed of her talents and that she was pursuing a new career as a translator for a nonprofit helping refugees.

It was inspiring to see Amanda regain her confidence and joy. Sometimes, a small act of kindness and standing up for what’s right can help someone rediscover their strength.
