The Day I Rescued Three Baby Goats and Understood My Mom’s Final Words

admin June 9, 2025

I didn’t mean to stop at that roadside auction.

I was just driving back from my mom’s old place—having just cleared out the last box of her sweaters—when I saw a handwritten sign: **“FARM SALE – TODAY ONLY.”** Something in me pulled over.

The lot smelled of hay, dust, and diesel. I wasn’t looking to buy anything. But then I saw them—three baby goats huddled in a small pen. One was brown, one white, and one had a speckled coat like a painting that hadn’t quite dried. They looked far too young to be without their mother. And they were shivering.

The man standing by the pen said they were “leftovers.” That word stuck with me. Leftovers.

The night before my mom passed, she’d whispered to me through her oxygen mask:
**“Don’t leave the soft things behind.”**

At the time, I thought she meant old photographs, her dog, or the little moments that stitch memories together. But looking at those trembling baby goats, I suddenly knew what she meant.

Without much thought, I knelt down and scooped all three into my arms.
**“I’ll take them,”** I said. I didn’t have a plan. Just a backseat full of blankets and a heart that still ached.

I named them Espresso, Latte, and Cappuccino—temporary names, I told myself. But naming them made it feel like they were already family.

That night, they turned my apartment into a playground. Espresso got stuck behind the fridge. Latte curled up in the laundry basket. Cappuccino climbed onto my bed and refused to leave. And for the first time in weeks, I laughed until I cried.

But reality soon caught up. Goats need space, grass, and sunshine. I began calling every farm and sanctuary within driving distance, hoping someone could give them what I couldn’t.

Eventually, I was led to a kind woman named Mrs. Harlow. She couldn’t take them, but she pointed me toward someone who might—**Sam Griggs**, a local rescue owner.

Sam’s place was a haven for animals. Dozens of rescued goats, chickens, pigs, and more roamed happily across his land. He had the space, the heart, and—most importantly—the experience.

“I’ll take them,” he said, “but only if you promise to visit. Animals remember kindness.”

Letting them go wasn’t easy. As I drove away, I could see Espresso pressing against the fence. But deep down, I knew they were where they were meant to be.

Weeks later, I went back to visit. The moment they saw me, they ran over, bleating with joy. I knelt down, surrounded by their tiny bodies, and felt a warmth I hadn’t known I needed.

Eventually, Sam asked if I’d consider adopting again. An elderly donkey named Daisy needed a home. She was gentle and wise, and something about her reminded me of Mom.

With a little help, I made space for Daisy. She became my quiet companion—always nearby, always present.

Then, a year after Mom’s passing, something unexpected happened. I received a letter from a lawyer. My mother had left me a small plot of land in the countryside.

With guidance from Sam and help from a few friends, I turned it into a peaceful sanctuary—a place for animals in need. Daisy thrived. I adopted two retired sheep. And each evening, as the sun dipped low, I stood on the porch with my tea, hearing my mother’s words echo softly:

**“Don’t leave the soft things behind.”**

Now I understand. She wasn’t just talking about memories. She was talking about compassion. About choosing gentleness in a world that sometimes forgets how.

So if you ever feel that tug in your heart—that nudge to help, to comfort, to care—don’t ignore it.

The soft things matter.
They always have.
