Trying to take my apartment and savings? Too bad I was a few steps ahead, huh, Maxim?” I said with a calm smile

admin June 9, 2025

Elena woke first, as usual. Maxim lay beside her, still asleep. Sunlight filtered gently through the curtains, casting soft light across the room. Three years ago, Elena had welcomed her husband into her home. Now, on some mornings, it felt as though she was the one visiting.

She stepped into the kitchen and started the coffee machine, taking out her favorite cup. Outside the window, the city moved at its usual pace—people hurrying, buses stopping, another day beginning. Elena, too, had a busy day ahead at the office, where her hard work was well rewarded.

“Len, did you forget what Mom asked for?” Maxim called from the bedroom.

Elena paused. The day before, his mother had asked for financial help—again. It wasn’t the first request in recent months.

“What request?” Elena replied playfully as she returned to the bedroom with her coffee.

Maxim yawned. “You said you’d think about helping her. She really needs support.”

“I did think about it,” Elena said, sitting down. “Maxim, your family has received a lot of help from us this past year. Nothing’s been repaid.”

“We’re family,” Maxim replied. “You’re doing well financially. A little help isn’t a big deal.”

That sentence stayed with her. Elena put down her cup.

“I work hard,” she said gently. “And I’ve supported both of us. But most of the extra support has gone to your family.”

“We agreed to share everything. I never moved money without your approval.”

That part was technically true. But sharing had always meant Elena giving more.

“Then let’s treat this like any other support—we’ll write it down formally. Just to keep things clear.”

“A loan agreement? For my mom?” Maxim frowned.

“I think it’s best. Otherwise, we can’t help again.”

He didn’t respond. Elena didn’t expect him to. She had given in many times before.

At work, the day passed slowly. Her focus slipped as thoughts returned to that conversation and the quiet shift she had been feeling in her relationship.

Later, needing a break, Elena stepped into a nearby café before her next meeting. It was mostly empty. She ordered a cappuccino and chose a seat in the back corner, shielded by a large plant.

As she scrolled through her phone, a familiar voice caught her attention.

It was Maxim—sitting at a nearby table with a woman Elena didn’t recognize. The woman was stylish, confident, and smiling. Elena’s heart began to race.

She couldn’t hear everything, but bits of their conversation came through clearly.

“Everything’s almost done,” Maxim said with a grin. “Just need her to sign a couple things.”

“She won’t notice?”

“She’s always busy with work. I’ll say it’s for paperwork—she’ll believe me.”

Elena froze.

“She won’t suspect anything. Once she signs, it’s just a matter of time. The apartment, the savings—it’ll all be settled.”

“That’s quite a result,” the woman said.

“Three years of effort,” Maxim smiled. “Playing the role. It’s been worth it.”

Elena’s hands tightened around her cup. Their conversation continued, but she could barely focus. His words echoed in her mind.

She waited until they left, then walked out of the café, feeling like the ground had shifted beneath her.

In the following days, Elena kept her thoughts to herself. She worked. Smiled. Played the part he expected. All the while, she was carefully, quietly preparing.

She transferred her personal savings to an account only she could access. Moved the property documents into her mother’s care. Reviewed everything.

On a rainy Saturday morning, she sat at the kitchen table sipping tea. Maxim had gone out, saying he’d be with friends.

He returned around noon, visibly upset.

“Elena! The account—where’s the money?”

She looked up, calm.

“You were hoping to take the apartment and the savings. But I was prepared.”

“What are you talking about?” he asked, unsettled.

“I overheard your conversation. The plans. The paperwork. The strategy.”

His face paled. “You misunderstood. It’s not what you think.”

“I heard enough. You spoke clearly. And you made your intentions obvious.”

“Elena, I made mistakes. But I care about you.”

She smiled gently. “At the café, you said it was just about finances. That’s not how real partnerships work.”

“We can fix this. Let’s try again.”

“I think it’s time we go our separate ways.”

“But I have rights! We shared everything.”

“Not quite. The apartment was mine before we married. The savings? Only I contributed. And there are records to prove it.”

Maxim’s voice rose, but Elena remained composed.

“You said it yourself—three years of effort. But I’ve decided that the next three years will be different.”

He stared at her in disbelief.

“I think it’s time for a fresh start. For both of us.”

That evening, he packed his things and left. The legal process went quickly—there was little to contest. The property remained hers. The accounts were clean.

His mother called often. Elena simply said, “Please speak with your son.”

A month later, Elena sat at a travel agency, flipping through vacation brochures.

“Italy? Greece?” the manager suggested.

“Bora Bora,” Elena said with a smile. “Three weeks. The best room you have.”

For the first time in years, she was investing in herself. And it felt like the beginning of something truly new.
