It all started with a small act of kindness.
โโ May I help you?โ the man called to the woman, noticing her struggle with two heavy bags.
โโ Oh, really? Are you sure? Arenโt they too heavy?โ she smiled, a little surprised. โโ Thank you.โ
Without hesitation, the man took the bags, making it seem like they weighed nothing at all, and began walking ahead with long, confident strides. The woman, Galina, a bit shorter and rounder than him, hurried to keep up, her steps quick and light.
โโ Please, slow down a bit! I can hardly catch my breath!โ she gasped, but the man didnโt seem to notice.
โโ Sorry! I got lost in thought,โ he apologized, turning back to her.
โโ What were you thinking about?โ Galina asked with genuine curiosity.
The manโs eyes seemed distant as he replied, โItโsโฆ about myself. About life.โ
Galina, ever friendly, looked him over. His clothes were worn, patched in places, and he seemed out of place in the lively town.
โโ What do you mean by that?โ she asked gently.
He sighed, scratching his head. โโ I think about a lot of things… just donโt really know where to start.โ
โโ Donโt tell me you drink?โ Galina asked cautiously.
He shook his head, reassuring her. โโ No, nothing like that. Justโฆ I think too much.โ
โโ Ahh, I see! So, whatโs your name, if you donโt mind me asking?โ
The man hesitated for a moment before answering, โโ They call me Vaska… but thatโs just a nickname.โ
Galina blinked. โโ A nickname? Whatโs your real name?โ
He paused, as though unsure of the answer. โโ Honestly, I donโt remember my real name.โ
Galinaโs eyes widened in surprise. โโ You donโt remember?โ
He shook his head. โโ I have no memories of my past. I was found on the side of the road, bruised and confused. No one knew who I was.โ
Her heart ached for him. โโ Thatโs… thatโs so tough. You must have been through a lot.โ
Vaska nodded. โโ I donโt remember much. Sometimes, I get flashes โ faces, places, but nothing concrete. Itโs like Iโm a new person, starting over.โ
โโ That sounds hard,โ she said softly. โBut you seem strong. Youโre still standing, and that says a lot.โ
Vaska smiled faintly. โโ I guess.โ
After some time, Galina spoke up. โโ You know, I can help. I work for someone who might need a strong hand around the house. You look like you could use a steady job.โ
Vaskaโs face lit up with hope. โโ That sounds amazing. Iโd really appreciate that.โ
Together, they walked to the large house where Galina worked. The iron gates opened to a sprawling garden, and a two-story home stood behind them, bathed in sunlight.
โโ Here we are,โ Galina said as they entered the house. โLet me introduce you to my employer. Maybe thereโs something here you can help with.โ
The kitchen was warm, filled with the comforting scent of fresh food. Galina quickly went to speak with her employer, leaving Vaska to sit and take in the surroundings.
The moment he stepped inside, he felt something stir in his chest โ an odd sensation of familiarity, like this place was somewhere heโd been before.
A few minutes later, Galina returned, bringing a plate of food. โโ You must be hungry. Go ahead, eat. Iโll be back soon.โ
Vaska sat down, took a bite, and immediately felt a sense of nostalgia flood over him. The taste was warm, comforting, familiar โ like a memory he could almost reach but couldnโt quite grasp.
Suddenly, Galinaโs employer, Rimma, walked into the room, holding an old photo album. As she glanced at Vaska, her expression changed, her eyes widening in recognition.
โโ Wait… Whatโs your name again?โ she asked softly.
โโ Vaska,โ he replied, still uncertain of his identity.
Rimmaโs face grew pale as she sat down, almost as though she were overcome by something deep and powerful. โโ No… thatโs not your name. Your name is Klim.โ
โโ Klim?โ Vaskaโs heart raced. โHow do you know that?โ
Rimmaโs voice shook as she explained, โโ Because… Iโm your mother.โ
The room seemed to stop. Galina stood frozen, watching the strange and emotional exchange between the two.
Rimma continued, โโ You were lost, and I thought Iโd lost you forever. But now\… here you are.โ
As she spoke, Vaska felt his memories slowly return in flashes โ images of his childhood, his father, his motherโs warm embrace.
โโ I named you Klim after my father,โ Rimma whispered. โYou were our miracle, but we lost you too soon.โ
Tears filled her eyes as she spoke about the day they thought he was gone forever, the day they had buried him, only to be reunited in this impossible moment.
โโ Mom…โ Vaska whispered, barely able to say the words as the truth settled in.
