When I moved into my new neighborhood, all I wanted was peace and quiet. After years of living in a noisy city apartment surrounded by sirens and honking traffic, the suburbs felt like heaven. The streets were lined with neat lawns, cheerful mailboxes, and friendly neighbors waving as they walked their dogs. It seemed like the perfect place to start fresh.

But peace didn’t last long. Because that’s when I met her — Margaret.

Margaret was the president of the Homeowners Association, and she took her title more seriously than most presidents take office. She had a clipboard for every occasion, a rulebook thicker than the Bible, and an ability to appear out of nowhere whenever something didn’t look “up to standard.” At first, I didn’t mind her. Every neighborhood needs someone to keep things organized, right? But I quickly realized Margaret wasn’t keeping order — she was controlling it.

It all started over something I never imagined could cause trouble. I had just set up my home internet and decided to give my Wi-Fi network a funny name. I’d seen the joke online for years, and it always made me laugh, so I named it “FBI Surveillance Van #4.” I thought it was harmless fun — a silly little joke only visible to people scanning for networks nearby.

A couple of days later, I got a loud knock at the door. When I opened it, there stood Margaret, clutching her clipboard like a sword, lips pressed tight.

“Good afternoon,” she said sharply. “We need to talk about your Wi-Fi.”

I blinked in confusion. “My Wi-Fi?”

“Yes,” she replied. “Several neighbors have expressed concerns about a network called ‘FBI Surveillance Van #4.’ They’re worried there’s some kind of government operation happening here.”

I laughed, thinking she was joking. “Oh, that? It’s just a joke name. I thought it was funny.”

Her eyes narrowed. “Well, we take community safety very seriously here. You can’t just broadcast something like that. It’s suspicious.”

Before I could explain further, she turned on her heel and muttered something about “reporting this to the proper authorities.”

I thought she was bluffing.

She wasn’t.

That evening, I was watching TV when I noticed flashing red and blue lights outside my window. I went to the door — and there were three police cars parked on my street. My stomach dropped. Surely this couldn’t be about the Wi-Fi… right?

An officer approached me cautiously. “Sir, we received a call about suspicious activity involving surveillance equipment or a government vehicle parked in this area.”

I just stared at him. “Wait—this is about my Wi-Fi name?”

He glanced at his notes, clearly trying not to smile. “Yes, sir. The caller reported that someone might be operating an FBI surveillance van in the neighborhood.”

Behind him, Margaret stood on the sidewalk, arms folded, watching like she had just solved a major crime.

I sighed and invited the officers in. “Please, come check. You’ll see it’s just a joke.”

Inside, I showed them my router, laptop, and even my Wi-Fi settings. “See? No vans. No surveillance. Just my bad sense of humor.”

The officers inspected everything, chuckled, and one of them said, “Well, that’s a first for us. You’re good, sir. We’ll mark this as a misunderstanding.”
