The grand villa on the hills overlooking Pristina glowed softly under the moonlight, its marble floors and crystal chandeliers a silent testament to years of success in construction and real estate.

At forty-two, Arben Mehmeti was one of the wealthiest men in Kosovoโ€”owner of multiple shopping centers, apartment blocks, and a chain of modern cafรฉs.

He lived alone in the sprawling house, his wife having left him years ago for a younger man in Tirana, and his two grown children now studying abroad. The emptiness of the large rooms had become his constant companion.

He had hired Elira six months earlier through a quiet agency. She was twenty-four, painfully shy, with large dark eyes that rarely met anyoneโ€™s gaze and soft hands that moved with careful precision.

Elira came from a poor family in a small village near Istok. She spoke little, worked hard, and never complained. She cleaned the villa every day, prepared simple but delicious meals, and kept the gardens tidy.

Arben had noticed how she blushed whenever he spoke to her directly and how she always chose the quietest corners of the house to work in. He found her shyness almost charming at first, then intriguing.

One quiet Thursday night, after a long day of meetings, Arben felt restless. He had heard rumors from the staff that some of his previous maids had stolen small thingsโ€”silverware, perfume, even cash left carelessly on tables.

He didnโ€™t suspect Elira, but a strange curiosity took hold of him. What would this timid girl do when she thought no one was watching? Would she finally relax, perhaps take a small liberty, or remain as dutiful as ever?

He decided to test her.

After dinner, he announced he was going to bed early due to a headache. He retired to his large master bedroom on the second floor, turned off the main lights, and lay down on the king-sized bed still fully dressed in his shirt and trousers. He closed his eyes and breathed slowly, pretending to fall into a deep sleep. The door was left slightly ajar, just enough for someone to enter quietly if they wished.

An hour passed. The house grew still. Arben could hear the distant hum of the city below the hill. Then, soft footsteps approached down the hallway. Eliraโ€™s familiar light tread. She was carrying somethingโ€”he could hear the faint clink of glass.

She entered the room hesitantly, pausing at the threshold as if checking whether he was truly asleep. Arben kept his breathing steady and his eyes closed, slits barely open so he could observe without being noticed.

Elira set down a small tray on the bedside table. On it was a glass of warm milk mixed with a spoonful of honey, exactly the way he liked it when he had trouble sleeping. She had remembered. Next to it, she placed a single fresh rose from the garden, its petals still dewy.

Arbenโ€™s heart gave a small, unexpected flutter. He had never asked for such things.

She didnโ€™t leave. Instead, she pulled the wooden chair closer to the bed and sat down carefully, folding her hands in her lap. For several long minutes she simply watched him, her expression soft and worried. Then, in a voice so quiet it was almost a breath, she began to speak.

โ€œMr. Mehmetiโ€ฆ I know you work too hard. You never rest properly. The doctors said your blood pressure is high last month, but you ignored them. Please drink the milk when you wake. It helps.โ€

Arben remained perfectly still, surprised by the concern in her tone. She had never spoken more than a few polite words to him before.

Elira reached into the pocket of her simple uniform and pulled out a small, folded piece of paper. She opened it gently and began to read aloud, her voice trembling slightly with shyness but full of sincerity.

It was a prayerโ€”an old Albanian prayer for health and protection that his own grandmother used to say when he was a child. Elira must have heard him mention it once in passing during a phone call. She had remembered that too.

When she finished the prayer, she folded the paper again and placed it under the glass. Then she did something that made Arbenโ€™s heart stop completely.

She leaned forward, her movements slow and hesitant, and very gently brushed a stray lock of hair from his forehead. Her fingers were warm and trembling. For a brief second, her palm rested lightly against his cheek, as if checking for fever.
