Near one of the taxiways, not far from a mid-sized passenger plane preparing for departure, a dog appeared on the runway.
At first, it seemed like a stray that had somehow wandered into a restricted area. It wasn’t unheard of, though it was rare. Security was usually tight, and animals rarely got close to active aircraft. But there it was—running across the open space, its paws hitting the tarmac with urgency.
Ground crew members noticed immediately.
One of them raised a hand, signaling to others. A vehicle slowed. Radios came to life with quick, confused communication. The dog didn’t behave like an animal that was simply lost or frightened.
It wasn’t running away.
It was running toward the plane.
