Boss Treats a Janitor Unfairly, Unaware of the Truth About Him

The corporate building stood in the heart of the city, surrounded by glass towers,

expensive restaurants, and busy streets filled with people rushing to their offices. Inside, everything reflected success and ambition.

The floors were polished, the conference rooms were lined with glass walls,

and employees dressed in expensive suits moved between meetings while discussing contracts, investments, and business opportunities.

At the top of the company stood Richard Hayes,

a powerful executive who had built his reputation on making difficult decisions and demanding excellence from everyone around him.

He was known for his sharp mind and impressive business results,

but there was another side to his personality that few people dared to challenge.

Richard believed that authority entitled him to speak however he wanted, especially to employees he considered unimportant.

Among those employees was an elderly janitor named Thomas Miller.

Thomas had worked in the building for nearly six years.

Every morning, he arrived before most of the office staff, carefully cleaned the corridors, emptied the wastebaskets,

and made sure the conference rooms were ready for the day’s meetings.

He wore a simple gray uniform and carried an old cleaning cart that he maintained with the same care he gave to his work.

Although he rarely spoke about his personal life, Thomas was known for his patience and kindness.

He greeted the security guards by name, helped visitors find the correct offices,

and often stayed a little longer when a particular area needed extra attention.

Some employees thanked him regularly, while others walked past without even acknowledging his presence.

Thomas never complained about being overlooked. He believed that honest work deserved respect, regardless of someone’s position in a company.

Richard, however, had never shown him much courtesy.

One Tuesday morning, the company was preparing for an important meeting with several international investors.

Richard had spent weeks organizing the presentation and expected everything to be perfect.

A successful deal could significantly expand the business, and he wanted to make a strong impression on everyone attending.

As he walked toward the main conference room, he noticed Thomas cleaning a section of the hallway near the entrance.

“Why are you cleaning here right now?” Richard demanded.

Thomas looked up from his work.

“Good morning, sir. I’m finishing the corridor before the guests arrive.”

Richard glanced at the cleaning cart and frowned.

“Well, finish somewhere else. We have important people coming into this building, and I don’t want cleaning equipment sitting around where everyone can see it.”

“Of course, sir,” Thomas replied. “I’ll move it immediately.”

The elderly janitor carefully pushed the cart toward a nearby storage area. He made sure it was completely out of the way before returning to wipe a small mark from the floor.

Richard watched him for a moment before shaking his head.

“Honestly, I don’t understand why this is so difficult. You should know how things work in a professional environment by now.”

Thomas remained silent.

A young employee named Daniel, who had been standing near the reception desk, overheard the exchange.

He glanced at his colleagues, hoping someone would intervene, but everyone seemed too uncomfortable to challenge the boss.

Richard continued toward the conference room, leaving Thomas to finish his work.

For the next hour, the building became increasingly busy. Employees carried documents between departments,

assistants arranged refreshments, and security personnel checked the names of the expected visitors.

Thomas continued cleaning quietly, careful not to disturb anyone preparing for the meeting.

Shortly before ten o’clock, Richard returned to the hallway and noticed Thomas standing near a large glass wall, inspecting a section he had just cleaned.

“Are you still here?” Richard asked sharply.

Thomas turned around.

“I’m sorry, sir. I was making sure the glass was clean before the guests arrived.”

Richard let out an impatient sigh.

“Do you ever finish anything without being told twice?”

Thomas lowered the cloth in his hand.

“I’ve finished the corridor, sir. I was just checking this last section.”

Richard looked toward the conference room, where several executives were already gathering.

“Listen carefully. Today is an important day for this company. I cannot have employees wandering around without understanding their responsibilities.

If you cannot complete a simple task properly, perhaps we need to reconsider whether you’re suitable for this job.”

The words were loud enough for several people nearby to hear.

Thomas stood quietly, his expression difficult to read.

“I understand, sir,” he said.

But Richard seemed determined to continue.

“No, I don’t think you do. Some people are satisfied doing the bare minimum, and others actually want to achieve something with their lives.

This company needs the second kind of people.”

Daniel looked away, visibly uncomfortable. A receptionist stopped typing for a moment,

and one of the assistants exchanged a concerned glance with a colleague.

Thomas placed the cleaning cloth inside his cart.

“I have always tried to do my work properly,” he said calmly. “If there is something you would like me to improve, I am willing to listen.”

Richard gave a dismissive laugh.

“Improvement? You’re a janitor, Thomas. Your job is to clean floors, not give me advice about how this company should operate.”

The hallway fell silent.
