Donald Trump has once again spoken on the reasons why he wants the US to annex Greenland.
The US President has declared that he’ll take over the territory ‘one way or the other’, a statement which went down very poorly among Greenlanders.
Trump’s sidekick JD Vance yesterday (28 March) travelled to Greenland to visit a US military base situated on the world’s largest island, joking as he arrived that it was ‘cold as s**t here’.
For this he was branded an ’embarrassment’ and Greenlanders had a very frosty response to his visit, with some saying they’d turn their backs to Vance if they saw him ‘because of the disrespect’ shown by the US.
Back in the White House, Trump has been speaking again on why he wants to have Greenland, declaring that the US needs it for ‘world peace’.
JD Vance thinks Greenland is ‘cold as s**t’
‘We need Greenland, very importantly, for international security, we have to have Greenland,” Trump said, before ominously insisting that the US could not ‘do without it’.
“It’s not a question of, ‘Do you think we can do without it?’ We can’t.
“If you look at Greenland right now, if you look at the waterways, you have Chinese and Russian ships all over the place, and we’re not going to be able to do that.
“We’re not relying on Denmark or anybody else to take care of that situation and we’re not talking about peace for the United States. “We’re talking about world peace. We’re talking about international security.
“And right now you look at it, you have warships all over the place going through, right along Greenland.”
Trump said that the US was ‘not going to let that happen’, but if it did ‘we have to be protective of our country’.
Again, he returned to his claims of ‘world peace’, saying that the US having Greenland for this purpose meant ‘protection, not only for our country, of the world’.
Thus far, the world has done just fine without the US occupying Greenland.
In addition to the influence occupying Greenland would have on emerging Arctic trade routes and international shipping around there, the territory also has a significant amount of natural resources which the US could exploit if it took over.
Quite how he’s going to take over Greenland has not been made clear, but since they’ve made it abundantly obvious that they don’t want him he can’t exactly bring them round with money or persuasion.
While Trump has said he would ‘protect it… from a very vicious outside World’, for many Greenlanders the most vicious thing about that outside world at the moment is Donald Trump’s America.
It’s not exactly ‘world peace’ if you have to go around conquering other places to achieve it.
