The morning sun rose slowly over the quiet countryside, spreading soft golden light across rolling fields and narrow dirt paths that connected scattered farms.
Dew still clung to the grass, sparkling beneath the first rays of daylight, while birds called from nearby trees as another peaceful day began.
A gentle breeze moved through patches of wildflowers growing along old fences, carrying the scent of fresh hay and damp earth left behind by the cool night.
Near the edge of a small pasture surrounded by aging wooden barriers, an unusual struggle had interrupted the calm rhythm of the morning.
A gray donkey, usually known for its patient nature and steady movements, found itself trapped within the remains of a broken wooden fence.
Several boards had collapsed during the night after years of weather and wear had weakened the structure. What had once been a sturdy barrier had turned into a tangled mess of cracked planks, loose nails, and splintered posts.
Somehow, while moving along the fence line, the donkey had become caught in the wreckage. One section of the broken boards rested awkwardly around its legs and lower body, preventing it from stepping away.
The animal stood motionless for several moments, ears raised high and eyes filled with uncertainty.
Occasionally, it shifted its weight and attempted to pull free, but each movement caused the loose boards to scrape against one another and tighten around its legs.
The donkey let out a worried bray that echoed across the pasture.
Its dark mane was covered with bits of straw and dust, and small pieces of broken wood lay scattered around its hooves.
Though not completely pinned down, the awkward position made escape difficult. Every effort to step backward only caused another board to shift into the way.
Nearby, several chickens wandered through the grass, unaware of the problem unfolding beside them. A few sheep grazed peacefully farther away, occasionally lifting their heads at the sound of the donkey’s calls before returning to their morning routine.
The sun slowly climbed higher.
Warm light spread across the fields, and shadows shortened. The donkey continued testing the broken fence, sometimes pushing forward, sometimes pulling backward, searching for an opening. Yet the tangled boards refused to release their grip.
Eventually, exhaustion replaced panic.
The animal lowered its head and stood quietly, breathing heavily. Though worried, it seemed to understand that struggling wildly would only make the situation worse.
Hours passed.
The farm remained peaceful. Wind rustled through nearby trees, and swallows flew low above the grass in search of insects.
Tractors could be heard in distant fields, their faint sounds drifting across the countryside. But this corner of the pasture remained empty, leaving the trapped donkey alone with its strange predicament.
Then, sometime later, the sound of an approaching pickup truck broke the silence.
A farmer returning from a nearby field drove slowly along the dirt path leading toward the barn. He had planned only to gather supplies before heading back to work, but as he passed the pasture, something unusual caught his attention.
At first, he noticed broken boards lying across the grass.
Then he saw the donkey standing strangely still.
And finally, he realized the animal was trapped.
He immediately stopped the truck.
Stepping out, he walked carefully toward the fence line.
The donkey noticed him and lifted its head. Its ears pointed forward, and it let out another anxious call. Though frightened, the animal remained in place, too tired to struggle violently.
The farmer paused a few steps away.
Years spent around livestock had taught him that calmness mattered more than speed. Frightened animals often reacted unpredictably, and sudden movements could create even greater problems.
So he stood quietly.
He examined the broken fence carefully.
Several boards had become wedged around the donkey’s legs, while one cracked post leaned awkwardly against its side.
Fortunately, nothing appeared to be pressing heavily against the animal, but the tangled wood created enough obstacles to prevent easy movement.
The farmer spoke softly.
His voice blended with the sounds of birds and the breeze moving through the grass. The donkey watched him closely, its breathing slowly becoming steadier. Though confusion remained visible in its eyes, the presence of someone familiar seemed to reduce some of its fear.
Clouds drifted lazily across the bright blue sky.
The farmer crouched slightly and studied the arrangement of the boards. Years of repairs had taught him how unpredictable broken wood could be.
One wrong movement might cause the planks to shift suddenly, frightening the donkey or creating additional difficulties.
Patience would be necessary.
