*When hidden secrets come to light, and you have to choose your future*
I found his old work phone left in my car today. It was tucked under the mat, dusty and forgotten among cables and empty water bottles. I was just cleaning before heading out to the grocery store when I noticed it.
Curious, I turned it on and saw a bunch of new message notifications from a contact saved as “Project Nightingale.” As I opened the messages, my stomach tightened. They weren’t about work at all. Instead, they contained detailed plans about money transfers, apartments, and someone named “Sarah.” The conversation went back months, filled with promises and excuses about late nights at the office — all things I had believed without question.
Then he came home, and when he saw me holding the phone, his smile disappeared. He looked shocked and nervous, asking why I was looking at it.
I asked him about the messages and Sarah. He hesitated, then admitted it was complicated. He explained Sarah was an old friend who needed help, and he was trying to be there for her. But the plans and talks didn’t feel like just helping anymore.
As we talked, I saw a woman standing outside across the street — calm but waiting. It was clear this situation was more than just friendship.
I told him I needed space to think and asked him to leave. He left quietly, and I watched as he met the woman outside before they drove away.
Now, sitting alone, I deleted the message thread and turned off the phone for good. The future is uncertain, but one thing is clear: it won’t include him.
