The rain was falling steadily that evening, tapping softly against the windows of the large modern house on the edge of the city. Inside, the warm lights and expensive furniture created an image of comfort and success. But behind the beautiful walls, something heartbreaking was happening.

In the living room stood Daniel, a successful businessman in his mid-thirties, dressed in a tailored suit. His face was tense, and his voice carried a sharp impatience. In front of him stood his mother, Maria, a small elderly woman with gray hair and tired eyes.
She clutched a worn handbag close to her chest.
โDaniel, pleaseโฆ just listen to me,โ she said quietly.
But Daniel had already made up his mind.
โIโve listened enough,โ he snapped. โYou canโt stay here anymore.โ
The words hung heavily in the air.
Maria looked around the house slowly. This was the house she had helped him buy years ago when his first business succeeded. She had celebrated every achievement of her son, always proud of him.
But now she looked like a stranger in the place she once called home.
โIโm your mother,โ she whispered.
Daniel sighed, running a hand through his hair.
โI know that,โ he said, his voice colder now. โBut this house is not a retirement home. I have investors coming here, clientsโฆ I canโt keep worrying about you wandering around.โ
Mariaโs hands trembled slightly.
โI donโt need much,โ she replied softly. โJust a small room.โ
But Daniel shook his head.
โNo. Itโs better if you stay somewhere else.โ
The silence that followed felt unbearable.
Finally, Maria nodded slowly. She didnโt argue anymore.
Sometimes the deepest pain comes not from strangersโฆ but from the people we love the most.
She picked up her small suitcase and walked toward the door.
Daniel avoided looking directly at her.
The door opened.
Cold wind rushed inside as the rain continued to fall outside.
Maria stepped out into the night without another word.
The door closed behind her.
Daniel stood still for a moment, feeling strangely uneasy, but he quickly pushed the feeling away.
โSheโll manage,โ he muttered to himself.
Days passed.
Then weeks.
Daniel continued with his busy life โ meetings, luxury dinners, and expanding his company. His mother rarely crossed his mind. Whenever she did, he reassured himself that she was probably staying with some distant relatives.
But one afternoon, everything changed.
Daniel received a call from a lawyerโs office.
โMr. Daniel Carter?โ the voice asked.
โYes.โ
โThis is attorney Lewis. Iโm calling regarding your mother, Maria Carter.โ
Daniel frowned slightly.
โWhat about her?โ
There was a brief pause.
โIโm sorry to inform you that your mother passed away three days ago.โ
The words hit him like a sudden shock.
For a moment, he didnโt know what to say.
โWhatโฆ how?โ he finally asked.
โShe had been staying in a small shelter outside the city. According to the staff, her health deteriorated quickly.โ
Daniel felt a strange knot in his chest.
The lawyer continued.
โYour mother left a will. You are required to come to the office tomorrow to hear it.โ
The next morning Daniel arrived at the lawyerโs office feeling uneasy.
The room was quiet as attorney Lewis placed a thick envelope on the table.
โYour mother left a written letter along with the will,โ the lawyer explained. โShe asked that it be read first.โ
Daniel leaned back slightly, crossing his arms.
If you are hearing this, it means I am no longer alive. I do not write this letter with anger, only with sadness. A motherโs love does not disappear, even when her heart is broken.
When your father died, we had almost nothing. I worked two jobs so you could study and build the life you have today. Every success you achieved filled me with pride.
I never wanted to be a burden to you. But when you asked me to leave the house, I realized that sometimes love is not enough to keep families together.โ
Daniel shifted uncomfortably in his chair.
The lawyer continued reading.
โThere is something you never knew. Over the last forty years, I quietly saved money from every job I had. I never spent it because I wanted to leave you something that would secure your future if life ever became difficult.โ
Danielโs eyes narrowed slightly.
Attorney Lewis paused for a moment before reading the next line.
โThe total amount I saved is 1.7 million dollars.โ
โBut money alone does not measure a personโs character. Because of that, I made one final decision.
My savings will not go to you. Instead, the entire 1.7 million dollars will be donated to shelters and programs that help elderly people who have been abandoned by their families.โ
