The tiny hedgehog barely moved.ย  ย FULL VIDEO BELOW

Curled beside a roadside drain, it remained almost motionless as cars passed only a short distance away.

Around its neck, a thin piece of discarded plastic had become tightly wrapped, making every small movement uncomfortable.

The morning was quiet.

Dew covered the grass, and birds called from nearby trees.

Yet hidden near the edge of the road, the little animal faced a challenge that few people would ever notice.

The hedgehog had likely wandered through the area during the night while searching for insects and shelter. Somewhere along its journey, the loose plastic became caught around its neck.

At first, it may have seemed like only a minor inconvenience.

But with every step, the plastic tightened a little more.

Unable to remove it on its own, the hedgehog stayed close to the roadside drain, exhausted after hours of trying to free itself.

Most vehicles drove past without slowing down.

The hedgehog blended almost perfectly with the dry leaves and grass surrounding the drain.

Then a morning walker noticed something unusual.

At first, it looked like a small pile of leaves.

But as the person came closer, they saw a tiny nose move.

The walker carefully approached and immediately realized the hedgehog needed help.

Instead of reaching down right away, they paused to observe.

Helping wildlife safely begins with understanding the situation before taking action. Following wildlife rescue safety tips helps reduce stress for the animal while protecting the rescuer as well.

The plastic appeared to be wrapped only around the hedgehog’s neck and had not become tangled around its legs.

The walker put on protective gloves and gently lifted the small animal onto a soft towel to keep it comfortable during the rescue.

The hedgehog curled into a tight ball, relying on its natural defense.

The walker remained patient.

There was no need to rush.

What should you do if you find a hedgehog tangled in plastic?

If you find a hedgehog caught in plastic or other litter, first make sure the situation is safe for both you and the animal. Wear gloves if possible, avoid sudden movements, and carefully assess how the material is wrapped. If the plastic cannot be removed easily or the hedgehog appears injured, contact a wildlife rescue organization or veterinarian for assistance.

Can you rescue a wild hedgehog yourself?

Minor situations may sometimes be handled carefully if the animal is not seriously injured and the hazard can be removed safely. However, if the hedgehog has deep wounds, difficulty breathing, or the entanglement is severe, trained wildlife professionals are the best option. Learning how to help injured wild animals also means knowing when expert care is needed.

After waiting a few moments, the hedgehog relaxed slightly.

Using a small pair of safety scissors, the walker carefully cut through one section of the plastic.

The material loosened immediately.

One more careful cut was all it took.

The plastic slipped away completely.

The hedgehog stayed curled for another minute before cautiously stretching its tiny legs.

It lifted its head.

Everything seemed normal.

The walker quietly placed the hedgehog beneath a nearby hedge, away from the roadside and close to natural cover.

For several moments, the little animal remained still.

Then, slowly, it began walking through the grass.

Within seconds, it disappeared beneath the bushes, returning to the quiet world where hedgehogs belong.

The discarded plastic was collected and thrown away properly to prevent another animal from becoming trapped.

Simple items such as plastic rings, bags, strings, and packaging can become unexpected dangers for wildlife when left in natural areas.

Learning wildlife rescue safety tips and understanding how to help injured wild animals encourages people to respond responsibly whenever they encounter animals in distress. Sometimes, removing one small piece of litter can protect many animals in the future.

The roadside grew quiet once again.

The drain remained where it had always been.

But one tiny traveler was no longer struggling nearby.

Thanks to one observant passerby and a few careful moments of compassion, the hedgehog continued its journeyโ€”safe, free, and ready to disappear into the undergrowth once more.
