Rain tapped softly against the windows, and the city outside seemed wrapped in a quiet, restless sleep. I remember checking my phone for the tenth time, staring at his last message โ€” โ€œI miss you. Come over tonight.โ€

Daniel and I had been inseparable for two years. He was the kind of person who filled every room with warmth, whose laughter made even ordinary days feel extraordinary. He understood me in ways no one else ever had. That night, I didnโ€™t hesitate. I grabbed my coat, drove through the rain, and went to see him.

When he opened the door, he lookedโ€ฆ different.

Paler than usual. His smile was softer, almost distant. His apartment felt strangely cold despite the heater humming in the background. I asked if he was feeling okay, but he simply brushed my concern aside, pulling me into a long embrace.

โ€œI just needed to see you,โ€ he whispered.

Something about his voice carried a weight I couldnโ€™t explain โ€” like a goodbye disguised as affection.

We spent the night together, talking, holding each other, sharing quiet moments filled with an almost overwhelming intensity. He spoke about memories we had shared, about dreams he once had, about love and time and how fragile everything was. At one point, he looked at me with such deep sadness that it made my chest ache.

โ€œIf anything ever happens,โ€ he said softly, โ€œpromise youโ€™ll live fully.โ€

I laughed nervously, telling him he was being dramatic.

I had no idea those would be among the last words I would ever hear from him.

The next morning, he was gone.

Not in any alarming way โ€” simply gone. The apartment was empty. His phone was off. I assumed he had left early for work or stepped out. There was no sign of struggle, no reason for concern. Just silence.

Two days later, my world collapsed.

I received a call from a mutual friend whose trembling voice delivered news that shattered reality itself. Daniel had been found dead in his apartment.

He had died two days before the night I visited him.

I remember laughing at first, insisting it was impossible. I had just seen him. I had held him, spoken with him, felt his heartbeat against mine. There had to be some mistake.

But there was none.

The official report confirmed it โ€” a sudden medical emergency, time of death precisely forty-eight hours before the night I had driven through the rain to see him.

I attended his funeral in a haze of disbelief. The closed casket, the grieving family, the finality of it all โ€” none of it matched the vivid memory of the night we had spent together. I told no one what had happened, terrified they would think I had lost my mind.

I tried to move forward, convincing myself that shock and grief had created some elaborate illusion. The human mind, after all, can play cruel tricks when confronted with unbearable loss.

Then, weeks later, another impossible truth emerged.

I was pregnant.

The news left me trembling in the sterile silence of the clinic. I had not been with anyone else. There was only one explanation โ€” the night with Daniel.

The night that, according to every record, could not have happened.

Fear wrapped itself around my thoughts like a tightening grip. I began questioning everything โ€” my memories, my sanity, the boundaries between life and death. Yet the memory remained vivid: his touch, his voice, the strange sadness in his eyes.

And then the dreams began.

At first, they were gentle. Daniel standing at the edge of a quiet lake, watching me with that same distant expression. He never spoke, only smiled faintly, as though guarding a secret.

But the dreams grew stronger.

He appeared closer each time, reaching toward my stomach, his eyes filled with both sorrow and wonder. One night, I finally heard his voice.

โ€œI couldnโ€™t leave you alone.โ€

I woke with tears streaming down my face, my hands trembling over the life growing within me.

As months passed, the pregnancy felt surrounded by an unexplainable presence. Lights flickered when I spoke his name. Objects moved slightly from where I had left them. A strange sense of comfort would wash over me in moments of fear, as if someone unseen stood beside me.

Yet there was no terror in it โ€” only an overwhelming feeling of protection.

I sought answers everywhere โ€” doctors, therapists, even spiritual advisors. Each offered rational explanations: grief-induced hallucinations, psychological stress, coincidence. But none could explain the precise details I remembered, the timing, the sensations that felt undeniably real.

The truth existed somewhere beyond logic.
