The riverbank was usually quiet in the early morning, broken only by the rustle of leaves and the distant calls of birds waking to the day. Tall trees leaned toward the water, their roots tangled and exposed from years of erosion. This stretch of land was home to many creatures, but few paid attention to one another. Survival, after all, left little room for kindness.

That morning began like any other for the monkey mother and her baby. They lived in the trees near the river, where food was plentiful and danger was familiar. The mother monkey moved carefully from branch to branch, one arm always slightly curved around her baby as he clung to her fur. He was still learning the rhythms of the forest, still surprised by the sounds and shadows that his mother knew well.

Below them, near the edge of the river, a duck had built her nest weeks earlier. She had chosen the spot because it was hidden among reeds and tall grass, close enough to water to escape predators. That morning, she was guiding her newly hatched chicks for their first swim. They followed her closely, tiny bodies wobbling as they tried to match her pace.

Everything felt calm. Too calm.

The rain had fallen heavily upstream the night before, unseen by those living along this quieter bend of the river. Now the water level was rising faster than usual, creeping higher against the bank. At first, it was subtle. The duck noticed it when the mud beneath her feet softened more than expected. She ushered her chicks closer, her instincts uneasy.

Then the current surged.

A sudden rush of water broke through the reeds, tearing away part of the bank where the nest had been. The duck cried out, flapping desperately as the ground gave way beneath her. Two of her chicks were swept into the fast-moving water before she could reach them. The others clung to the remaining grass, cheeping in panic.

High above, the monkey baby shrieked at the sound. His tiny fingers tightened in his motherโ€™s fur as she froze, listening. She followed the noise with sharp eyes and saw the chaos below. The duck struggled against the current, her movements frantic and uncoordinated. One chick vanished briefly beneath the water, only to resurface farther downstream.

The mother monkey hesitated.

Monkeys were not creatures of water. The river was dangerous, unpredictable. She had a baby to protect. Every instinct told her to stay where she was, to keep to the trees and let nature take its course.

But she didnโ€™t move away.

Instead, she climbed lower, gripping the trunk with strong limbs until she reached a thick branch that hung just above the water. The baby monkey whimpered, sensing his motherโ€™s tension. She pressed him close with one arm, eyes locked on the struggling duck.

Below, the duck managed to push two chicks toward a partially submerged log, but one remained trapped in the strongest part of the current. The chickโ€™s tiny wings flailed uselessly. Its cheeps grew weaker with every second.

Without warning, the mother monkey leapt.

She landed on the log with a splash, water soaking her legs instantly. The current tugged at her fur, trying to pull her off balance. She tightened her grip, wrapping her tail around the log for stability. The baby monkey cried out, terrified, but she held him firmly against her chest.

The duck froze, stunned by the sight. A predator would have been expected, not help. But the monkey did not lunge or threaten. Instead, she reached into the water with her free hand, stretching toward the struggling chick.

The first attempt failed. The water was too fast.

The second attempt nearly pulled her in.

The baby monkey shrieked again, clutching her tighter, but she did not retreat. With a low, determined sound, she leaned farther, fingers brushing the chickโ€™s soaked feathers. The current tried to steal it away, but she closed her hand gently around its tiny body and lifted it free.

The chick was alive.

She placed it carefully on the log beside the others, shielding them with her body. The duck rushed forward, wings spread wide, but stopped short, uncertain. The monkey mother met her gaze, unmoving, calm.
