The railway line cut straight through the outskirts of a quiet rural town, stretching across open fields before disappearing into a distant forest.

Rust-colored tracks gleamed faintly under the afternoon sun, and the rhythmic silence of the place made it feel almost frozen in time. Trains passed through only a few times a day, but when they did, everything around the tracks became dangerous within seconds.
On this particular day, something had gone terribly wrong.
A man walking his dog along the edge of the railway path had slipped on loose gravel near a slight embankment. In a moment of lost balance, he fell down the short slope and landed awkwardly between the wooden sleepers beside the rails. The impact stunned him, leaving him disoriented and unable to stand immediately.
Beside him was his dog.
A loyal mixed-breed, medium-sized, with alert ears and anxious eyes, the dog had been walking just ahead when it heard the sudden fall. It turned instantly and ran back, jumping down the slope without hesitation. When it reached its owner, it nudged him repeatedly, whining softly, trying to get him to move.
But the man didnโt respond quickly enough.
He was conscious, but shaken and in pain, struggling to push himself up from the uneven ground. One of his legs was twisted at an uncomfortable angle, and every attempt to stand sent a sharp pain through his body.
The dog stayed close.
It circled him once, then stood directly between him and the open stretch of track, as if instinctively understanding that staying near the rails was dangerous. It barked sharply, loud enough to echo along the empty line, then returned to its owner, licking his hand and nudging his shoulder again.
The man tried to sit up, but slipped slightly on the gravel.
Above them, the world remained unaware.
Far down the track, a train had already begun its approach.
At first, it was just a faint vibration in the railsโso subtle it would be easy to miss. Then came the distant sound of steel wheels against metal, growing gradually louder with every passing second.
The dog noticed first.
Its ears snapped toward the direction of the sound. It barked again, more urgently this time, then began pulling at the manโs sleeve with increasing intensity. It tugged, stepped back, and barked again, trying to force him to move.
The man finally realized what was happening.
The sound was unmistakable now.
A train.
He looked down the tracks and saw it in the distanceโa faint shape growing larger, moving fast, far too fast for comfort.
He tried again to stand, but pain forced him back down.
The dog became more frantic.
It ran a few steps up the embankment, then returned immediately, refusing to leave him behind. It barked repeatedly toward the tracks, then pushed its head under his arm, trying to lift him.
Seconds were collapsing into each other.
The train horn sounded in the distance.
Louder now.
The vibration of the rails grew stronger.
The man knew he couldnโt move far enough on his own.
The dog stayed beside him, trembling but alert, still refusing to abandon him even as danger approached at speed.
Then, suddenly, another sound broke through the tension.
A voice.
A railway maintenance worker had been inspecting a signal box nearby when he heard the barking and the distant horn. Realizing something was wrong, he ran toward the sound along the side path parallel to the tracks.
When he reached the slope, he immediately saw the situation: a man down between the rails and a dog refusing to leave his side.
The worker shouted and waved his arms.
โHey! Over here!โ
The dog turned briefly toward him, then back to its owner, still torn between guarding and seeking help.
The worker didnโt waste time.
He slid down the embankment carefully, boots scraping against gravel, and reached the man within seconds. He grabbed him under the arm and began pulling him upward.
โCome onโhelp me!โ
The man groaned in pain but managed to push slightly with his remaining strength.
The dog stayed right beside them, circling tightly, barking toward the tracks again and again as the sound of the approaching train became deafening.
Together, the worker and the man struggled up the slope.
Just as they reached the top of the embankment, the train thundered past the exact spot where the man had fallen only seconds earlier. Wind and noise exploded through the air, shaking the ground as the massive machine rushed by.

The man lay safely on the grass now, breathing heavily, pain still present but no longer in immediate danger. The worker checked him quickly, confirming he was stable enough to wait for medical assistance.
