The first rays of morning sunlight stretched across the rolling countryside, painting the fields with soft shades of gold and green.

A cool breeze drifted through the tall grass, and birds sang from the tops of old fence posts scattered along the landscape.
Farmers had not yet fully begun their daily routines, and most of the roads remained quiet except for the occasional passing vehicle heading toward nearby towns.
Near the edge of a large pasture, separated from the grazing fields by a worn wire fence, a mother sheep stood anxiously beside a shallow embankment.
Her white wool, slightly dusty from hours of pacing, moved gently in the wind as she repeatedly called out with desperate bleats.
Her eyes remained fixed on something beyond the fence, toward the narrow highway that curved around the countryside like a ribbon of gray stone.
Not far away, her little lamb faced a frightening situation.
The young animal, still small and unsteady compared to its mother, had somehow wandered through a damaged section of fencing and found itself dangerously close to the roadside.
The lamb stood confused among patches of dry grass and loose gravel beside the pavement. Cars occasionally rushed past, their noise startling the tiny creature each time they appeared around the bend.
The mother sheep remained trapped inside the pasture. She paced back and forth, repeatedly calling to her young one.
Every sound she made echoed across the quiet fields. Though unable to reach the lamb herself, she refused to leave the area.
Her protective instincts kept her standing near the broken fence, watching every movement of her little one.
The lamb answered with soft cries of its own.
Still young and unfamiliar with danger, it seemed uncertain about where to go. Sometimes it moved toward the road before retreating again, frightened by the sound of approaching vehicles.
Other times, it simply stood still, looking back toward its mother while trying to understand why they had suddenly become separated.
The distance between them was small, but the fence and the highway created a barrier that neither could safely cross.
As the morning continued, traffic slowly increased. Delivery trucks, motorcycles, and family cars began appearing more frequently.
Drivers rarely noticed the tiny lamb standing near the shoulder of the road. Most vehicles passed quickly, disappearing around the distant hills.
Meanwhile, the mother sheep became increasingly restless. She walked circles around the damaged fence line, occasionally lowering her head and nudging the wire as though trying to create an opening large enough to reach her young one.
But the fence remained too narrow, and every effort only left her more distressed.
The lamb wandered several feet farther from the road and then back again. It was searching for familiar sounds and scents, but confusion prevented it from finding the safest direction.
The surrounding area offered little shelter. Tall weeds lined parts of the roadside, while small drainage channels cut through the grassy embankments nearby.
Clouds drifted slowly overhead as the sun climbed higher into the sky.
Hours seemed to pass quietly.
The mother sheep never stopped watching.
Even when she paused to rest, her eyes remained focused entirely on the lamb. She ignored the nearby grass and barely moved away from the fence.
Her calls became softer at times, but they never stopped completely.
The lamb, though tired, continued responding whenever it heard its mother’s voice.
Their communication, carried by sound alone, maintained a connection despite the obstacles separating them.
Further down the highway, a maintenance worker drove slowly along his usual route. His responsibilities involved checking signs, inspecting drainage areas, and reporting damaged sections of fencing that bordered nearby farms. It was routine work, and he had traveled the road countless times before.
As his vehicle rounded a curve, something unusual caught his attention.
At first, he noticed the mother sheep pacing frantically behind the fence.
Then he spotted the little lamb standing dangerously close to the roadside.
Immediately, he slowed his truck.
Stepping out carefully, he observed the scene.
The mother sheep froze momentarily upon seeing him. Her ears lifted, and she watched him cautiously, though her attention quickly returned to her lamb.
The worker followed her gaze and immediately understood the situation.
The damaged section of fence explained everything.
The lamb had likely slipped through the opening while exploring, leaving its worried mother unable to follow. With traffic steadily increasing, the danger surrounding the young animal was obvious.
The worker remained calm.
He first checked the road carefully before approaching the lamb.

The little creature noticed the stranger and became uncertain, taking several hesitant steps away. Its small legs trembled slightly, and it looked back toward its mother, whose cries grew louder once again.
The worker stopped and moved slowly.
