The desert stretched endlessly in every direction, a vast expanse of cracked earth and shimmering heat. The midday sun hung mercilessly overhead, turning the air into a wavering blur. There were no trees, no shade, and no sign of lifeโ€”just a long, empty road cutting through the barren landscape like a scar.

It was the kind of place where you didnโ€™t stop unless you absolutely had to.

A lone motorcyclist named Ethan sped along that road, his engine humming steadily beneath him. He had been riding for hours, crossing miles of dry terrain, focused only on reaching the next town before nightfall. Sweat clung to his skin beneath his jacket, and the heat pressed down on him from all sides.

Then, something unusual caught his eye.

At first, it looked like nothing more than a distortion in the road aheadโ€”just another crack in the dried asphalt, something common in such extreme conditions. But as he got closer, he noticed movement.

Ethan slowed down.

His eyes narrowed.

There, in the middle of the cracked road, were two tiny shapes struggling.

He immediately pulled over, the tires of his motorcycle crunching against loose gravel as he came to a stop. Turning off the engine, the sudden silence of the desert wrapped around him, broken only by a faint, desperate sound.

Whimpering.

Ethan quickly removed his helmet and rushed forward.

What he saw made his heart drop.

Two small puppiesโ€”no more than a few weeks oldโ€”were trapped inside a deep crack that had split the asphalt. The gap was narrow but deep enough that their tiny bodies had slipped inside, leaving them stuck with no way to climb out.

Their fur was dusty and matted, their little paws scrabbling helplessly against the rough edges. Every time they tried to push themselves upward, they slipped back down.

They were exhausted.

And in that heat, they wouldnโ€™t last long.

โ€œHow did you two even get hereโ€ฆ?โ€ Ethan muttered, kneeling beside the crack.

There was no sign of their mother.

No houses nearby.

Nothing but endless desert.

The situation was urgent. The sun was relentless, and the road itself radiated heat like a furnace. The puppiesโ€™ small bodies were already tremblingโ€”not just from fear, but from dehydration and fatigue.

Ethan looked around quickly.

No one else was coming.

It was just him.

He acted immediately.

Carefully, he lay flat on the scorching road, ignoring the heat pressing through his clothes. He reached his arm down into the crack, but it was deeper than he expected. His fingers barely brushed the fur of one of the puppies before it slipped away again.

โ€œEasyโ€ฆ easyโ€ฆโ€ he said softly, trying to calm them.

The puppies whimpered louder, frightened but desperate.

Ethan pulled his arm back and thought quickly.

He removed his backpack and searched inside, pulling out a small bottle of water and a cloth. He poured a little water onto the cloth and gently squeezed droplets down into the crack.

The puppies licked at the moisture instinctively.

โ€œHang on,โ€ he whispered. โ€œIโ€™m getting you out.โ€

Looking around again, Ethan spotted a long metal rod attached to the side of his motorcycleโ€”part of his tool kit. He grabbed it and returned to the crack.

Using the rod carefully, he began widening the opening just enough to make space without causing the asphalt to collapse. Each movement was slow and controlled. The last thing he wanted was to make the situation worse.

The road resisted at first.

But after several tense minutes, the crack widened slightly.

Enough.

Ethan lay down again and reached in.

This time, his hand wrapped gently around one of the puppies. It was weak and trembling, but alive. Slowly, carefully, he lifted it out of the crack and placed it on the road beside him.

The tiny animal collapsed immediately, panting softly.

โ€œOne more,โ€ Ethan said, his voice filled with urgency.

He reached back in.

The second puppy had slipped deeper, making it harder to reach. Ethan stretched his arm as far as he could, his fingers brushing against the small body again and again.

โ€œCome onโ€ฆ come onโ€ฆโ€

Finally, he caught hold of it.

With a careful pull, he brought the second puppy out.

Both were now free.

Ethan sat back, letting out a deep breath of relief.

The puppies lay close together, too weak to move much, but their breathing slowly began to steady. Ethan poured a small amount of water into his hand and let them drink, watching as their tiny tongues lapped eagerly at the drops.

โ€œYouโ€™re safe now,โ€ he said quietly.

The desert wind picked up slightly, offering a faint, temporary relief from the heat.

Ethan knew he couldnโ€™t leave them there.
