Officer Daniels, a well-trained and experienced security officer, had begun his shift expecting nothing unusual. On this particular morning, however, something caught his eye. A woman in modest clothing, carrying a stack of folders, stood near the front of Courtroom 2B. She seemed anxious, glancing at her phone and pacing lightly. Daniels had patrolled this area long enough to know most regular court personnel, and he did not recognize her. The courthouse had strict rules only authorized individuals were allowed past certain points unless they had a scheduled hearing.

“Officer Daniels, is there a problem?” Judge Harrington asked, glancing up from his stack of morning case files.
Daniels straightened. “Your Honor, I’m speaking with this woman here. She was standing in a restricted area without proper identification.”
The judge removed his glasses and looked directly at the woman. A slow smile formed on his face.
The Judge Offers Clarification
“Ah,” the judge said warmly. “There she is. Officer, that woman is exactly where she should be.”
Daniels blinked. “Sir?”
The judge motioned her forward.
“She’s the new court-appointed interpreter. Today is her first day.”
A wave of realization washed over the entire courtroom. The woman exhaled with relief, her shoulders finally relaxing.
“I tried to explain,” she said gently, “but I think I got nervous.”
Judge Harrington stood.
“It’s quite all right. This courthouse would be lost without people like her. She’ll be assisting with three hearings this morning.”
Officer Daniels immediately stepped back, his tone shifting from caution to professionalism.
“My apologies, ma’am. We have strict protocols, and I didn’t recognize you.”
The woman smiled softly. “I understand. You were just doing your job.”
