The old manโ€™s cottage stood quietly at the edge of a peaceful lake, surrounded by tall grass, whispering trees, and the gentle sounds of nature. Every morning, just as the golden sunlight touched the waterโ€™s surface, Grandfather Elias followed the same routine.

He stepped onto his wooden porch with a warm cup of tea, greeted the birds, and waited patiently for his loyal companion to join him.

That companion was Milo โ€” a small corgi with short legs, bright eyes, and a surprisingly sharp mind. Though tiny in size, Milo possessed an intelligence and awareness that often amazed everyone who met him. He was not just a pet but a devoted friend, always watching, always understanding.

On one quiet morning, however, something was different.

Elias had barely taken his first sip of tea when Milo burst from the yard, barking urgently. His usual cheerful energy had been replaced by clear distress. He ran in tight circles around the old manโ€™s feet, whining loudly, then dashed toward the tall grass near the lake before racing back again.

โ€œWhat is it, boy?โ€ Elias asked, concerned.

Milo tugged gently at the hem of the old manโ€™s trousers, pulling insistently toward the lakeside. His eyes were wide with urgency, his small body trembling with determination. It was clear he was trying to communicate something important.

Elias set down his tea immediately. โ€œAlright, show me.โ€

The corgi dashed ahead, stopping every few steps to make sure the old man was following. Together they pushed through the thick grass, moving toward the quiet edge of the lake where reeds swayed softly in the breeze.

Then Elias heard itโ€”a weak, desperate sound.

A soft quacking, trembling with pain.

Near the waterโ€™s edge lay a wild duck, its wing twisted awkwardly, feathers soaked and muddy. The poor creature struggled helplessly, unable to stand or move properly. Its breathing was shallow, and its frightened eyes darted between the approaching humans and the open sky above.

Milo approached slowly, lowering his body close to the ground to avoid frightening the injured bird. His barking had stopped, replaced by gentle whimpers. He glanced back at Elias, as if urging him to help.

โ€œOh, you found her,โ€ Elias whispered softly.

He knelt beside the duck, moving carefully so as not to cause more distress. Years of living close to nature had taught him how to handle injured animals with patience and care. He examined the birdโ€™s wing gently and quickly realized it was badly injuredโ€”possibly broken.

โ€œIf we leave her here,โ€ he said quietly, โ€œshe wonโ€™t survive.โ€

The duck trembled as he carefully wrapped it in his soft wool scarf, securing the injured wing to prevent further damage. Milo sat nearby, watching closely, his expression almost protective, as though he had personally taken responsibility for the fragile life before them.

Back at the cottage, Elias prepared a warm space near the fireplace. He cleaned the duckโ€™s wounds, applied herbal medicine made from plants he had gathered, and carefully fashioned a small splint for the broken wing. The process took hours, but he worked with steady hands and endless patience.

Milo never left the duckโ€™s side.

He lay quietly beside the makeshift bed, occasionally nudging the bird gently with his nose, as if offering comfort. Whenever the duck stirred in pain, Miloโ€™s ears perked and he would glance toward Elias, silently asking for help.

Days passed slowly.

The duck remained weak at first, barely eating, barely moving. But with warmth, care, and constant attention, it gradually regained strength. Its breathing steadied, its eyes brightened, and it began accepting food from Eliasโ€™s hand.

Throughout the recovery, Milo acted like a devoted guardian. He chased away curious cats, barked at any unfamiliar movement near the cottage, and even brought small sticks and leaves, placing them near the duck as if building a safe nest.

The bond forming between the unlikely trioโ€”an old man, a clever corgi, and a wounded wild duckโ€”was something quietly extraordinary.

Weeks later, the duck finally stood on its own. Though the wing was not fully healed, it could stretch and move without pain. Elias knew the time would soon come to return the bird to the lake where it belonged.

On a calm afternoon, under a clear blue sky, Elias carried the duck back to the waterโ€™s edge. Milo walked proudly beside him, his small tail wagging gently, yet his eyes filled with quiet concern.

Elias knelt and carefully placed the duck near the lake. For a moment, it remained still, adjusting to the familiar surroundings. Then it slowly stepped toward the water, dipping its beak into the surface, testing its strength.
