The rain had been falling steadily all afternoon, blurring the city lights and turning the streets into long, reflective ribbons of red and white. Daniel was already late getting home when he saw her. She stood alone at the edge of the sidewalk, soaked to the skin, her small frame trembling beneath an oversized hoodie that hung off her shoulders. Cars rushed past without slowing, water spraying up around her sneakers.

At first, he hesitated. The city had taught him caution. But then she looked up, and their eyes met.

She couldnโ€™t have been more than twelve, maybe thirteen at most. Her face was pale, lips tinged blue from the cold, and her hands were clenched tightly around her stomach. When she took a step forward, she nearly collapsed.

Daniel pulled over without thinking.

He jumped out of the car and rushed toward her. โ€œHeyโ€”are you okay?โ€ he asked, already knowing the answer.

She shook her head weakly. โ€œIโ€ฆ I donโ€™t feel good.โ€

That was all it took. Daniel wrapped his jacket around her shoulders and guided her into the passenger seat. Her body was frighteningly light, and she winced when she sat down.

โ€œIโ€™m taking you to the hospital,โ€ he said firmly. โ€œWhatโ€™s your name?โ€

โ€œLily,โ€ she whispered.

As he pulled back onto the road, Daniel tried to keep his voice calm, reassuring. โ€œYou did the right thing standing where someone could see you. Weโ€™ll get you help.โ€

She nodded, staring out the window as rain streaked down the glass. Her breathing was shallow, uneven. Daniel glanced at her every few seconds, his hands tight on the steering wheel. He thought about his own daughter, about how terrified he would be if she were out alone like this.

โ€œWhere are your parents, Lily?โ€ he asked gently.

She didnโ€™t answer right away.

โ€œI ran,โ€ she finally said.

Daniel frowned. โ€œRan away?โ€

Another pause. Then a small nod. โ€œThey donโ€™t know Iโ€™m gone.โ€

His heart sank, but he kept driving. โ€œWeโ€™ll figure that out later. Right now, letโ€™s focus on you.โ€

They drove in silence for a few minutes, broken only by the hum of the engine and the rain. Then Lily shifted in her seat, pressing her forehead against the window.

โ€œMister,โ€ she said softly, โ€œI need to tell you something.โ€

Daniel glanced at her. โ€œYou can tell me anything.โ€

She swallowed hard. โ€œIโ€™m not a kid.โ€

He laughed lightly, assuming she meant she was older than she looked. โ€œOkay. How old are you then?โ€

โ€œNineteen,โ€ she said.

The word landed wrong, like a puzzle piece that didnโ€™t fit.

Daniel slowed slightly. โ€œNineteen?โ€

She nodded, tears pooling in her eyes. โ€œI know I donโ€™t look it. People always think Iโ€™m a child.โ€

A warning bell rang faintly in his mind, but he brushed it aside. Age didnโ€™t change the fact that she needed help.

โ€œWhatโ€™s wrong?โ€ he asked.

Her hands began to shake. โ€œIโ€™m sick. Really sick.โ€

Danielโ€™s stomach tightened. โ€œThatโ€™s why weโ€™re going to the hospital.โ€

โ€œNo,โ€ she said quickly. โ€œYou donโ€™t understand. Iโ€™ve been hiding it. I didnโ€™t want anyone to know.โ€

Hiding what? he wondered.

She took a shaky breath. โ€œI didnโ€™t collapse because I was cold.โ€

Daniel felt a chill that had nothing to do with the rain. โ€œThen why?โ€

She turned toward him, eyes wide with fear. โ€œBecause Iโ€™m dying.โ€

The words seemed to suck all the air out of the car.

Danielโ€™s foot instinctively pressed harder on the accelerator. โ€œWhat do you mean, dying?โ€

โ€œI have leukemia,โ€ she whispered. โ€œStage four. I stopped treatment months ago.โ€

Danielโ€™s mind raced. โ€œWhy would you do that?โ€

โ€œBecause I couldnโ€™t afford it,โ€ she said, tears spilling freely now. โ€œAnd because I was tired of hospitals. Tired of needles. Tired of being afraid.โ€

He tightened his grip on the wheel, fighting back anger at a system that could leave someone so young so alone.

โ€œYou shouldnโ€™t have to go through this alone,โ€ he said quietly.

She laughed bitterly. โ€œI already am.โ€

Another silence settled between them, heavier this time.

Then she spoke again, her voice barely audible. โ€œThatโ€™s not the worst part.โ€

Daniel felt dread creep up his spine. โ€œLilyโ€ฆ what else?โ€

She hugged herself tightly. โ€œI lied to you.โ€

His chest tightened. โ€œAbout what?โ€

โ€œI didnโ€™t stop you because I was lost,โ€ she said. โ€œI stopped you because I needed someone to take me to the hospitalโ€ฆ and stay.โ€

โ€œBecause I donโ€™t have anyone left,โ€ she whispered. โ€œNo parents. No guardians. I aged out of foster care last year. If I go in alone, theyโ€™ll stabilize me and send me back out. I needed someone to care enough to stay.โ€
