Dark clouds had gathered over the city long before sunset, swallowing the last traces of blue sky and replacing them with a heavy blanket of gray.

The wind had been growing stronger throughout the afternoon, bending trees and carrying leaves and dust through the streets.
By evening, the storm had fully arrived. Rain poured relentlessly from the sky, turning sidewalks into streams and streets into rushing channels of water.
Thunder rolled in the distance, and flashes of lightning briefly illuminated the soaked buildings and empty roads.
Most people had already taken shelter indoors, waiting for the weather to pass. Cars moved carefully through the rain, their headlights cutting through the darkness while windshield wipers struggled to keep pace with the downpour.
The entire neighborhood seemed focused on escaping the storm.
But beside a flooded street corner, hidden from most eyes, a tiny life was fighting a battle of its own.
A small lizard had become trapped on top of a street drain.
The frightened reptile clung desperately to the metal grate with its tiny claws. Water rushed around it from every direction, creating a swirling current that threatened to sweep it away at any moment.
The drain below roared with the sound of rushing water disappearing underground. For such a small creature, the metal grate had become both a lifeline and a prison.
The lizard’s body trembled from exhaustion.
Its usually agile movements had become stiff and uncertain. Rain pounded against its scales relentlessly, and strong gusts of wind nearly lifted it from its precarious position.
Every few seconds, another wave of water surged across the pavement, forcing the little animal to flatten itself against the slippery metal.
Its dark eyes darted around nervously.
Instinct urged it to seek shelter beneath rocks or among dry grass, but there was no safety here. The floodwater had isolated it completely.
One wrong movement, one loss of grip, and it would be carried into the drain below, disappearing into the underground tunnels beneath the city.
Lightning flashed overhead.
For a brief second, the entire street glowed white.
Then came the thunder.
The sharp crack echoed between buildings and caused the lizard to flinch. Its tail twitched anxiously as another wave of rain crashed over the grate. The tiny creature pressed itself lower, gripping desperately with every ounce of strength it had left.
The storm showed no mercy.
Leaves, small branches, and pieces of debris rushed past in the current. Some became trapped against the drain, creating temporary blockages before being washed away again. The water level rose steadily, and the swirling force around the grate grew stronger.
The lizard tried to move.
Slowly, cautiously, it stretched one leg toward the edge of the drain. But the metal surface was slick. Its foot slipped, causing the tiny animal to lose balance momentarily.
Panic surged through its body. It scrambled desperately and managed to regain its grip, but the close call left it frozen in fear.
Minutes passed.
To the lizard, they must have felt like hours.
Its breathing became faster. The cold rain soaked its entire body, making it harder to move. The once energetic creature now looked exhausted, clinging to survival in the middle of a storm far larger and more powerful than itself.
Cars occasionally passed nearby, sending waves of water splashing across the road.
Their tires hissed against the flooded pavement, and the sound of engines blended with the constant drumming of rain. No one noticed the small reptile struggling just inches above the roaring drain.
Another burst of wind swept through the street.
This time, a cluster of wet leaves slammed against the grate, partially covering the lizard. Startled, it scrambled sideways. One claw slipped.
Then another.
For one terrifying second, the little animal dangled dangerously near an opening in the metal grate. The rushing water below seemed eager to pull it downward.
But somehow, the lizard managed to cling to a narrow section of the grate.
Its body trembled violently.
It remained completely still afterward, as though afraid that even breathing too deeply might cause it to lose its hold.
Above, the storm continued to rage.
Thunder boomed again, closer this time.
Rainwater poured from gutters and rooftops, adding even more force to the flood racing along the street.
The drain had become a whirlpool, swallowing water endlessly. Around it, the city continued its nightly rhythm, unaware that a tiny creature was locked in a desperate struggle against nature.

The lizard lifted its head weakly.
Its eyes blinked against the rain as if searching for anythingโsome branch, some crack in the pavement, some path to safety. But all around it there was only water and smooth concrete.
