The beach was quiet in the early morning, the kind of stillness that only comes just after sunrise. Waves rolled in gently, leaving thin lines of foam that faded into the wet sand.

Seagulls circled lazily overhead, calling out as they searched for scraps along the shoreline. A light breeze carried the salty scent of the ocean across the empty coast.
But near the waterโs edge, something was wrong.
A young seal was struggling.
Half in the shallow surf, half on the sand, the seal had become entangled in a large plastic bag that had drifted ashore.
The thin, crinkled material had wrapped loosely but dangerously around its neck and front flippers, tightening each time it tried to move.
The tide had likely brought it in during the night, unnoticed, and now it had turned into a silent trap.
The seal twisted and rolled, trying to free itself.
Its sleek grey body moved awkwardly against the wet sand. Each time it pulled toward the water, the plastic shifted and tightened again. Panic set in quickly. The seal let out distressed criesโsharp, repetitive sounds that echoed faintly across the empty beach.
Waves continued to lap at its side, but the ocean that usually meant freedom now offered no help.
The seal paused for a moment, breathing heavily.
Then it tried again.
It dragged itself forward, only to be pulled back by the bag, which caught on a piece of driftwood buried in the sand. The movement caused the plastic to tighten further, restricting its motion even more.
Its eyes were wide and alert, filled with confusion and fear.
The beach remained empty.
No people.
No movement except the tide.
Minutes passed, and the sealโs energy began to fade. It shifted less violently now, as exhaustion slowly replaced panic. The plastic bag clung stubbornly, its edges glistening with seawater and sand.
Far above, a pair of gulls landed nearby, watching but keeping their distance.
The morning sun climbed higher, brightening the shoreline and revealing more debris scattered along the coastโfishing lines, broken nets, and fragments of plastic washed in from distant currents.
Then, in the distance, a figure appeared.
A person walking along the beach.
At first, they were just a silhouette against the rising sun. But as they drew closer, they noticed the unusual movement near the waterline.
They slowed.
Then stopped.
The seal noticed them too.
It shifted weakly, letting out another cry.
The person immediately understood something was wrong.
They moved closer, carefully and slowly, stepping over seaweed and driftwood. The seal reacted nervously, attempting to pull away, but the plastic bag restricted its movement.
The person stopped a few feet away and crouched down.
The seal froze, breathing rapidly.
The plastic bag was clearly wrapped around its neck and one flipper, tightened by the motion of the tide. It was not just stuckโit was at risk of injury if it struggled further.
The person reached into a small bag they were carrying and pulled out gloves, moving cautiously to avoid startling the animal. Every movement was slow, deliberate, and calm.
The seal watched closely, still unsure.
Another wave rolled in, briefly lifting part of the plastic and making the situation worse.
The person waited for the water to recede, then carefully stepped closer again.
The seal tensed but did not move away.
It seemed too tired to fight anymore.
Carefully, the person began working at the edge of the plastic, trying to loosen it without pulling directly on the seal. The material was thin but stubborn, stretched and tangled around the flipper and caught on debris beneath the sand.
The wind shifted.
Seagulls called in the distance.
The ocean continued its steady rhythm, unaware of the small struggle taking place at its edge.
Bit by bit, the plastic began to loosen.
The seal flinched once but remained still, as if sensing that resisting would only make things harder.
Finally, with one careful motion, part of the plastic slipped free.
Then another.
The loop around the neck loosened enough to fall away, and the remaining piece around the flipper came free with a gentle pull.
For a moment, nothing happened.
The seal simply lay there, breathing heavily, blinking toward the person.
Then it slowly shifted its body.
It tested its flipper.
Free.
A sudden burst of energy returned.
With a quick movement, the seal slid back into the shallow waves, splashing once, then again, as it regained the safety of the water.
Within seconds, it was gone beneath the surf, disappearing into the rolling blue sea.

The person stood still for a moment, watching the place where it had vanished.
The plastic bag remained on the sandโsmall, crumpled, harmless now, but a reminder of what had nearly happened.
