Method
Prepare the Baking Dish
- Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C). Grease the bottom and sides of a large baking dish with the butter.
Make the Garlic Cream Mixture
- Combine the heavy cream, whole milk, minced garlic, salt, black pepper, dried thyme, and paprika in a saucepan over medium heat. Warm gently for 3–5 minutes without allowing the mixture to boil.
Layer the Potatoes and Cheese
- Arrange a layer of thinly sliced potatoes across the bottom of the baking dish. Sprinkle some mozzarella, cheddar, and Parmesan over the potatoes. Repeat the layers until all the potatoes and cheese have been used.
Add the Cream Mixture
- Slowly pour the warm garlic cream mixture over the layered potatoes, making sure it spreads evenly and reaches between the layers.
Bake While Covered
- Cover the baking dish tightly with aluminum foil and bake for 45 minutes.
Create the Golden Crust
- Remove the foil and continue baking for another 25–30 minutes, until the potatoes are tender, the cheese is bubbling, and the top is golden.
Rest and Garnish
- Remove the potato bake from the oven and allow it to rest for approximately 10 minutes. Sprinkle with chopped parsley, extra Parmesan cheese, and optional fresh cracked black pepper.
Serve
- Serve the creamy cheesy garlic potato bake while it is still warm.
Notes
Slice the potatoes thinly and as evenly as possible so they cook at the same rate. Warm the garlic cream mixture gently without boiling it. Keep the baking dish covered during the first 45 minutes, then remove the foil to develop the golden crust. Allow the bake to rest for 10 minutes before serving.
